Default Best Motor Oil for LS1

My ls1 goes thru about 1 quart of oil every 2 thousand miles with 5w30 mobil 1 full synth. It has 89000 miles now, should I go back to conventional or high milege. I have no leaks its very dry underneath so it has to be burning a little.
Any advice would be helpful.

they also suck oil through the throttle body. i use castrol GTX in mine and it uses about 1/2 quart every 3k. my car only has about 25k on the clock though.

I suppose you could try an oil catch can. That level of consumption while using Mobil1 5W-30 may not be all that bad though. Mobil1 is available from a number of places at pretty low prices as compared with some others and adding a quart every 2k miles gives the oil a fresh shot of additives.

Normal for a LS1 using 5-30, I switched to 10-30 and the oil usage went way down.

Yes, it is well within the normal range, which varies with mileage among other things.

Lubrication engineers. Look it up. I work for a roofing company with a fleet of light and heavy duty trucks, dump trucks and loader trucks. We have switched to their 10w30 and cut oil consumption. They make racing oils also.

Try using either Royal Purple 5W30 or 10W30. I think you'll see a significant reduction in oil usage. I just put Brad Penn 10W30 synthetic blend in my SS, cheaper than any full synthetic and better than all of them. It's a real performance oil, if you have cats use their full synthetic 5W30.

I have used WalMart 5w-30 since I bought the car in Dec1997. I also have the Vertical PCV Mod and it doesn't burn any oil. At least it can't be noticed on the dipstick.

My 98 Z28 with 275,000 miles uses about 1 qt. every change. 10,000 miles to a change. Mobil1 15,000 mile oil is what I use.

yah i concur,
I use 100% RP 5w-30, and RP oil filter. Great stuff I havent noticed any oil consumption, but my car only has 24k miles.

Another to consider is AMSoil, hear nothing but great things from it. Can't go wrong with mobil1 synthetic or castrol gtx either.

a oil catch can is a good investment too, i hear good things about it. GL and hope you find what your looking for

Here in AZ, it's classified as "extreme" conditions - dust and heat you know. Given that, I put full synthetic in with a rating of 10W-40. I switch between Mobil 1 or Castrol Edge/Syntec. Never had any problems.

Something to keep in mind (and trust me, many people debate it) is the length at which you change your oil. Oil is in itself a "filter" catching microscopic debris over time. In AZ, oil get dirty quickly compared to say, a cooler/humid state. I don't change every 6K like the MFRs suggest. I do mine about every 2.5-3.5K or when it feels like I've gone a few months. The result? The oil isn't black like tar, instead, it's like a medium-roast coffee color, which means it's clean on the insides. Just my experience/opinion - it's debatable.

Edelbrock full synthetic. They just came out with it and I use it. Very, very good oil!

I don't know what best is. If I want to argue over small differences I would say that Pennzoil Platinum 5W30 and German Castrol 0W30 are better than Mobil 1 5W30 synthetic. You might find that you like Mobil 1 0W40 a little bit better than their 5W30.

Pick something with a HTHS of at least 3.0 and less than 3.6 and you should be ok viscosity wise. Most of the synthetic oils on the shelf have at least decent additive packs.

The catch can will help out at least it did on mine.I guess it slows the suction down a little bit.I would say any 5-30 synthetic would be fine as long as you change it like it is supposed to be changed.I see people run advanced auto synthetic oil with a bunch of miles on their cars.

I use Mobil 1 in my newer cars, 10w30 in my LS1's and 0w40 in my MB and AMG. In the older flat tappet cam cars I run conventional with zddp addative.

+1 on a catch can though, too much oil sucked through the throttle body for my tastes.

Same here... It is pricey, but as far as I am concerned... u get what u pay for.
I used to run Rotella, after trying Amsoil once, nothing else will run in my LS1.

Good luck with your choice. Many good brands out there.
If money is a factor, I have heard some good things about the Wal-Mart brand synthetic.
