Default Engine Build Cost Input

I'm going to be building a 408 from a 6.0. This is my first LS build so I have no idea what everything should cost. I will be providing my builder with a block, cam, LS3 heads/intake, lifters, springs, pushrods. He will be doing all the block check/clean/machine and supplying all the parts: Forged internals cranks/rods/pistons, bearings, rings, gaskets, new timing set, ARP studs/bolts throughout, break in oil/filter, test fitting, final assembly.

I got a call from him yesterday and he gave me a price of $5200.

Does this sound about right? High?

Thanks for the input guys!

Sounds about right.... call a few other places local to you that have LS experience and see what they tell you.

If you say 2500 for interals
13-1500 for machining bore/hone any notching or balancing
building it to a longblock say another 1100

I'd say it sounds pretty close. I've talked with three shop very recently and
that is about the range i've been told as well.

Just make sure they have done LS's before and be sure they know what
they are doing... that is a hunk of change for sure

Seems a little on the high side. I know this may be late, but you might be able to do it cheaper and just as good with buying a built shortblock from someone.

TSP has fully built and balanced 408 shortblocks for $4000. Then you just pop on the heads and intake yourself and boom save $1200.

Now days having the work done to the block and assembled is almost always going to end up costing more.

I've never put an engine together so I would just rather a shop do it and make sure it's right with that much money tied up in it. That $4000 also doesn't include crate/shipping, timing set, assembly, gaskets, studs, oil pump.

That price sounds about right, I'm sitting right under $8,000 on my 408 build

Yes exactly, like i said that is 200 less for one place and 100 more from another.

gaskets, fluids for your install, break in oil, water pump, oil pump, all that stuff adds up

I'm at about $2200 for my rebuild, but I also bought some go fast goodies and have been peicing together parts for a couple months.

My machine cost where 12xx.xx and some change and I ended up assemblng it myself. Make sure he plastic gauges every rod and every main bearing. I found that the bearing that i was supplied that the .0015 which is pretty tight. I hasd to get the CB 663 HXN bearing from Clevite to give me the right clearances.

Hope that helps/

Ask him how he knows to double check.
