Default Technically speaking....isn't it an LS6 now? LOL

OK, so lets say a guy has an LS6, and puts an EPS 226 cam in it. Its still an LS6, right?

Well what if a guy (like me) had a 2002 LS1, which had the LS6 block and LS6 intake. I put some 243 heads on it, and put an EPS 226 cam it. Isn't it "technically" the same as the first guy?

Not splitting hairs, just curious.

Just go by the block and quit pulling hairs. I have an ls1 and if I did everything to make it to spec with an ls6 engine I'd still say it's an ls1 with an ls6 conversion

The difference between ls6 and ls1 -01-02 blocks .. heads which like you said 243's and cam .. yea I'm sure some other little stuff like valley cover and little details but the power should be the same

Doesn't it depend on whether the 243s have the hollow intake and sodium filed exhaust valves of an LS6?

Right there....that's the kind of stuff I was wondering about. If I had to guess, I'd say you are correct. Now....if I go with a TEA Stage 2 job, then I'm off the hook!! LOL

Not that it really matters to me in the end, but I'm just wondering if I'd be lying to people if I told them that the engine was an LS6. Doesn't make a difference really, just more of a conversation piece.

I started out with an LS6 ('05 CTS-V), but I swapped on a set of TrickFlow 215s with Ferrea valves. I suppose that if mine is still considered an LS6, with aftermarket valves, yours would be too.

Technically, it wasn't only the cylinder heads and valvetrain that differed the LS6 and LS1 engines. The LS6 engine block was based off the LS1 but was modified for better bay-to-bay breathing, and has different pistons then the LS1. So the LS6 shortblock is different then the LS1. The LS6 also came with bigger fuel injectors, upgraded exhaust manifolds and PCV system. Just noting the details.

The pistons are different between ls1s and ls6s. Labels dont matter....power does.

I tend to see things this way too. The LS6 was a complete engine package from the block on out from the factory. If you change the cam and or the heads on the LS6 engine, do you still have an LS6 engine? I would have to say NO because its been altered and probably for the better. The LS6 was by no means the most beat all of engines, but rather another factory created engine that could kick the butt of the stock LS1. I have a new crate LS6 in my 02 z28. Anything below 3500 rpm's just leaves me saying...OK, but about 4000 rpm's, it pulls like a freight train so smooth. I think of changing out the cam all the time because I want a faster/quicker freight train lol.

I think I agree for the most part. For all practical purposes, I think whatever base block you have is what engine you have, along with any exceptions. For example, if you started out with a LS6 engine but added a different cam, heads and intake, technically you still have a LS6 but with whatever specific heads, cam, intake. I'll take my engine for another example; I started out with a stock LS1. Even though I've added the LS6 valley cover (PCV system), LS6 oil pump, LS6 intake, heads, cam, etc., I still say I have a LS1 but with those additional parts. I'm not going to claim I have a LS6 now because I've added LS6 parts. I still have a LS1 block, therefore I claim I have a LS1. Just my 2 cents.

So if you put a SS hood/wing/wheels on your z28 does it make it a Camaro SS?

No.

OMG...

LS6 block is better in the ways noted + the rear oil passage that feeds the top end is much larger. It's not an LS6 unless it's a freakin' LS6. Who cares, anyway? LS1 or LS6, they're both bad-*** platforms capable of 500 RWHP w/ the proper modifications.

Why the f'ck did I even come in here. It's a newb discussion

What a grouchybear^ golly gee Lol but as I stated before. Yes. A ls1 is a ls1 Is a ls1 and a ls6 is a ls6 is a ls6. Just because you strap a rocket to your car like they use on space ships doesn't mean it's the Frickin NASA

Obviously you didn't see my LOL in the thread title, and the couple times I said this was just a topic for discussion. This wasn't meant to be 100% LS1-veteran-serious, rather just something to kick around with regards to the internal differences between the two engines.
