Default Another "which cam?" thread

I'm new to the board and new to the LS series entirely. I'm putting an LQ4 into a rather lightweight 65 Rambler American. I plan on doing a light port job on the stock 317 heads and i'd like to save money by keeping the stock truck intake manifold. I'll be adding a ported T/B as well. I'd like to run an A4 with 3400 stall and a 28" tall back tire. This will be a street/strip car leaning more towards the street. What cam fits my recipe?

And since we are on the topic of RPM range, how far can i push the truck intake? I believe torque is king on the street, but would i really be that much better off with an LS6 intake?

p.s. There is a chance this will be a boosted set-up later on down the road, but that is far, far in the future.

Thanks

First off welcome to the site! Yes a LS6 intake would be better then the truck one. As far as the cam goes it depends on what your looking for... peak hp, trq curve, good manners, choppy idle... ect give us a little more to work with and there will be a lot of cams thrown at you really quick.

Well my n/a goal would be around 400 to the wheels and torque to match. I'd like it to be a very streetable, well mannered car, not too choppy with the idle. Since i'll be using the A4 and higher stall converter, i'd like something to compliment that. Thanks in advance!

Everything i've read about the torquer says that it is pretty choppy with no low end power...

one of the more popular cams which would meet your power goal and can be
tuned for only a little bump is the EPS 222/226. Goeff Skinner is a very
cool guy and can explain all the details and corresponding items, springs, push
rods, etc.....Also the truck intake is a few inches taller than the ls6 piece so
you may need a small cowl scoop however I've read that it doesn't give up
much if any power. Maybe mill your 317s like .030 to get 10 to 1 comp.

Ls 2 timing chain ($40) heavier duty works w/stock gears, possibly a new oil
pump depending on current mileage. I just ported mine and shimmed the by-
pass spring for more pressure (only had 15,000 on it). Search as many other
threads as you can stand, you'll discover so much by accident

When you said this, did you mean it won't make power or there isn't much difference between the truck and ls6 intake? I've been roaming around this site a good bit and picked up a lot of info so far. Thanks for the input.

3.73 gear with a 28" tall tire. Car should check in close to 3100 pounds. Can i port/clean up my truck intake manifold for any extra gains? Is there enough plastic there to take any away? If i go with the EPS cam, what LSA?

Sounds like you don't want a race car sound ? Maybe in the 114-117 range

Will you be running LT headers, or stock manifolds?

I'll be using the stock manifolds for now. Engine is from an 01 Denali.

With stock exhaust manifolds and heads I'd go with a traditional split pattern cam. Somewhere along the lines of a FMS-F7, 224/230 114lsa.

Im New to the LS family as well and have a similar question, I have a 99 Z28 with an LS1 and I was wondering if you guys have any suggestions on a cam that would give me a good horsepower gain but a good torque gain to?

So as of right now, here are the recommendations:

FMS-F7 224/230 .588/.595 114 LSA
TR224 224/224 .563/.563 114 LSA
EPS 222/226 .597/.598 113 LSA
Torquer V2 232/234 .595/.598 114LSA

I think the torquer v2 might be the winner. I watched some videos and it doesn't sound too lopey and the longer exhaust duration might help if i end up turboing this thing.
