Default Stuck LS7 lifter...

Putting in a new set of LS7 lifters and one of them is completely stuck won't move up or down at all. I had the heads back on the car and couldn't get it to spin to line up with the lifter tray. Now I cannot get the lifter to come back out the top. I now have the heads off and the cam out as well and it will not move up or down. What else can I do? And is there anything else I can do to catch it from dropping in the pan if I try and push it out the bottom?

Not sure I follow, you installed a brand new lifter and it went part way in and stopped? What did you do at that point, did you try to force it down? Also, which cylinder?

Just trying to understand the situation.

Get a good long pen magnet and slide ot down in the cam bore under the lifter....then gently tap the lifter out the bottom of the lifter bore and pray the magnet grabs it good

Always put some lube on them 2 make it slide in and not force it in. But I agree on the magnet thing. Try that out and hope 2 god it gets stuck on it

Could also cut a peices of poster board and slide it in the cam bore kinda like a half moon shaped net to catch it....then slide the magnet in to pull the lifter out after you knock it down on there

The lifters were soaked in oil for at least a half hour. I was putting them in there normally and it stopped maybe halfway down. I pushed down on the lifter and it wouldn't move anymore. I tried to take it back out to inspect it but it won't budge either way now. I can no longer push on it by hand. I'm guessing I have to tap it through the bottom with something?

Oh and it is the second to last lifter on the passenger side towards the firewall.

It was lubed plenty. I had lubed the lifter as well as the bore and all of the lifters went in perfect except for this one. It was giving me all sorts of hell just even getting in. So once I got it in and it felt like it was okay and not jammed - I pressed down. Now I can no longer move it nor spin it to line up with the lifter tray. Either way I'm going to be trying to remove it and will definitely not be using that one again. Rather just go and get a new one. Although I need to get this one out first and it's definitely not budging.

I hate to say this, bit did you try grabbing the flat sides gently with s pair of visegrips and twist it back and forth and out? Sounds like you might have a small bur in the lifter bore

Tried that last night. I put a rag over the lifter and tried to grab it with some vice grips and twist - no dice. I'm probably going to see if I can get my hands on one of those lifter holders and try a long magnet and tap it through the bottom. I just need it out at this point.

I'd be afraid to push it through in fear of opening/damaging the lifter bore. Obviously there is either a problem with the bore or the lifter. Since you pulled a set of lifters out with no problem, my guess is that one lifter is over sized. I would do everything I could to pull it back out the way it went in but that's just me.

Pushing it all the way thru is a sure way to really screw up the lifter bore.

remove it the same way it went in.

How about taking it apart and using a bolt extractor to screw down in it....if you can get it to turn it should come back out.

But like said above, be careful not to mess up the lifter bore

Ya I don't care about the lifters anymore. I'm just going to get a new one at this point. I'll try pulling it back through then.

I've been trying for the past hour and a half and it isn't budging. I'm gonna be at it all night tonight trying to muscle it out. I have another lifter that I went out and got so I can get back to it.

Heat shrink gun, maybe even a hair dryer on full blast, blowing on the block surface @ the lifter bore to heat it up and expand it a bit. And one of those gel ice-pack things directly on the lifter top.

You don't want to gouge up the lifter bore trying to force it out.

I agree, but first spray with penetrating oil, then use the heat gun followed by a can of "compressed air" with a straw directly on the lifter. You can get the air at Office Depot type places...

Great idea! Hold the can upside down for more/faster effect.

I have some pb blaster I can use as well as WD40. I also have a heat gun so I will try that..but freeze the lifter with compressed air upside down at the same time that I heat the block;

Hmmm, I'm wondering how hard you pushed it down for it to be stuck like this...?

Did you notice anything unusual about that lifter before you put it in, or about the old lifter that came out of there...?
