Default How long do you crank an engine to prime the oil?

I just put a used 6.0 in my Trans am that's been sitting a while. Anyways I fired it up with the drivers valve cover off and there isn't any oil in there, was only running a few seconds. But I cranked it maybe a good 15 seconds before that..

How long do I have to crank an engine for oil to get to the top? I don't want to run it like this.

if your cranking the engine oil will all most never make it to the top. If its idleing it takes like 15-20 sec to get to one head and like 25-30 to get the the other head not sure which one takes longer.

I had a HV oil pump and it still took stupid long for oil to reach the top end

about 20 seconds should do it...i just disconnect the coils and remove the fuel pump relay and crank till i get the oil gauge to move inside the car...oil is definitely making it to the topend and coming out the pushrods/rockers...

I pulled my plugs and and spun the engine over for about 30 seconds and had good oil pressure.

At work we disconnect coils and fuel pump fuse/relay and crank till the oil light goes out, usually takes upto 30 seconds or so, haven't timed it exactly but feels like about that.

Disconnect the ignition system so it does not start, pull the fuel pump relay, and then what I have found to be the easiest way is this, IT WORKS EVERY TIME FOR ME....
I put the car up on stands, and level it out, pull the oil filter, then hold a pan under it, I have someone turn the car over until Oil comes out of the filter housing,, Then I put the oil filter back on (filter full of oil), then prime the engine, it wont take long at all after that,, I have had these engines scare me half to death because I could not get oil to the top when priming, this has always worked for me. It also helps alot to have the plugs out of the engine, not as hard to turn over,, and spins faster. Hope this helps

There is a port on the drivers side front of the block where you can thread a line from a seperate oil pimp(electric possibly) to prime the motor.

I think this would be the best way since it primes the oil system without moving any engine parts.

what blacksilverado is talking about is actually how the dealership can do it, there is a pressurized tank, and hose/fitting setup that forces oil into the galley system with out the engine even turning over,, However,, the last time I looked that setup was almost $450.00 alot of coin for something you may use only 1 time.

Problem is I don't have gauges, imma try the cranking method though. Anyone think I'm just being paranoid?

My old engine seized up and had metal in the pan before I ever even drove the car.

Does the oil kinda squirt out or just run out? When it was running little specs flew out every now and then but I think that was just runoff on the springs.

Spun it over for 30 seconds and it only got through one push rod on each side, am I doing good so far?

I'm trying to be as careful as I can with this engine.

Trying this for the first time on a new motor and not sure what to expect.

Have the plugs out and it's turning but slowly. How quick should it turn when cranking?
Not sure it'll prime at this slow speed.

You guys are cranking for a long time. Can the starter take that?

Disconnect coils/injectors and fuel pump..

I turned it over 7-8 times for about 10 seconds each.

Oil pressure is pretty darn important. Aside from not having gauges yet, I would invest in a $20 set from Autozone. If something is not right, you are not going to catch it before its too late (Loss or absent pressure & overheating).

Read the thread from the guy who forgot to install the dumb bell plug. If he didn't have a gauge, he would have been running the engine with NO oil!

Anyone know how quickly the motor should spin or turn on the power of the starter and a fully charged battery?
With plugs pulled?

Thx?

I used a pressurized tank while spinning it over by hand. It took a really long time to get oil out of all the rockers. I want to say maybe 10 minutes. Not sure if it was just lack of spinning preventing oil flow or what but it took some time and effort.
