Starting new motor? Break in?
I know there are alot of threads on this but its one of those things i don't want to screw up so direct help would be great.
My motor has been run for maybe 15 seconds total. Its a newly built 404. I have a few questions.
When i first started it, it seemed to idled really high. I did not have a tach on it yet because my brother whom was helping me had work and had to leave so i wanted to give it a quick fire and have two sets of eyes on everything.
What rpm should it start off at?
It should idle back down onces it warm correct?
How should i first break it in? i've read 20 min at 2k. Then change oil.
Im using joe gibbs break in oil, what should i use after the first 20 min?
Oil pressure came right up, so thats one less thing for me to worry about. Im going to go install the tach now and hopefully give it another go once i get some responses from you guys.
Thanks in advance,
Marcello

that 20 mins at 2k was for flat tappet lifters so the lifters would wear to the cam.
roller cams dont need that. still need to seat the rings but driving it will do that. one school of thought is to not beat on it for a few hundred miles. another one is to run the rpms up under load and then let it engine brake back down. i havent tried either.

I read that about flat tappet lifters but wasn't sure if it applied here. My tranny is jammed so i can't really drive it yet.
Id like to atleast let the motor heat cycle a few times before i drive it either way.

Letting a brand new engine idle for any length of time is not a good idea because of ring flutter, you have to have cylinder pressure to properly seat the rings and a load is the best way to do that.

So i gave it another start. Hoping the idle would come down. It was around 1800. Then i adjusted the tb a bit and brought it down to around 1300-1500.
How long does it take the ecu to learn? Im going to call my tuner and find out what idle he had set in the tune.

Once it had cooled down i ran it again. Idle dropped down a bit lower. I saw it go to about 1k, then kept my eye on other things, but my brother notice it drop further to around 800-900. I gave it a quick rev and noticed it took a bit of time to idle back down. What may keep the idle high?
I also let it run a little longer and my one fan, and radiator couldn't keep uo. It almost hit 250*. Whats the average temp for an ls motor?

just rememebered that i don't have a true 50/50 mix. It had leaks while at the shop and they filled it with water. Then i added more 50/50. Im going to go buy some undiluted and add it to the mix. Not sure how much to add tho.
