Question Help! Found bearing on oil plug

I changed my oil (I use Mobil 1) and found a small piece of metal magnatized to the oil drain plug. It looks like a roller bearing of some sort, and is very small, only about a 1/4" long cylinder. The car doesn't drive or sound any different. So if you have any ideas of what this is, or at least if I should be concerned and have the car checked out, please let me know. Thanks,
Mike

It's a rocker bearing. One of your rockers failed and there are probably more down in the pan.

Yeah, order another rocker and find and replace the one that spilt its guts.

If you do a search on rocker bearings you should be able to find the quantity of needles you need to look for. I can never remember off hand how many you need to dig outta the oil pan or from under the valve cover. Something like 20-30'ish.

GM has a TSB on this, if it is still under warranty they will replace all the rockers, not just the one(s) that lost needle bearings.

It's a '99 SS. I guess since I have no idea how long I have been driving like this, another day of driving won't kill it until I can get it to the shop. Thanks guys.

I just changed my oil and found the same thing. Found this thread via search before I posted something. How many bearings are in a rocker?? Because I had probably 8 or 9 of these things in the drain pan. Is it safe to drive the car like this? I will replace the roller rockers, but I'm moving in a few weeks and would rather wait and do the install once I'm moved.

There is 20-30 as JMX said and I would not drive with them floating around to get wedged somewhere or the rocker to take something out. I just cracked a retainer and droped a valve it does not look pretty.

Ouch that had to hurt, I agree with N8 get those bearings out of there and replace the rockers. Metal peices flying around the engine can cause some major damage.

I don't know how safe it really is to drive around before replacing them, but for all you know the rocker could have failed 3000 miles ago right after you changed the oil the last time. After I found mine, I didn't want to take chances, so the next time I drove it was to the dealer. I would recommend buying your parts from gmpartsdirect.com, cause you'll save a couple hundred dollars over what the dealer can get for the same gm parts. It's still an expensive repair though!
