Default Need experienced opinions for stock LS1 HP gains PLEASE?!

I recently purchased a stock LS1 longblock out of a '99 T/A w/55k miles on it. Missing an oil pan but still has the LS1 Intake. It will be going into my '02 Camaro SS 35th LE. It will be the first time I have ever rebuilt an engine and I'm looking for suggestions on what I can do to get the most HP gain at a very tight budget. Please help.

I have heard swapping to LS6 heads is an improvement and I'm willing to buy a set of used ones. I do not want to change any of the crank assembly parts. I don't want to change Intake unless necessary. Willing to swap cams and necessary internals of the LS6 heads if it helps. I already have Kooks shorty hearders and GMMG exaust with HF cats.

So, with all that said, can someome give me any suggestions on any machine work tricks that can be done to the block or heads that would show significant HP gains? I've tried to study cam specs but damn they are confusing! Keeping in mind that this car is a DD, I just want to make sure the drivability doesn't kill me too much.

Thanks in advance for ANY help the Tech Masters can give me!!
Jason

Get an ls6 intake, get ported 243 heads (or send some to TEA or AI for porting), top it all off with the right cam and that thing will scream.

shouldnt the 2002 LS1 engine already have the LS6 intake on it? can you get the off of your 02 motor? Stock 243 or 799 heads (same head different number) flow great stock. Look at texas speed for cams. Many people are going to the 224R or the 228R and getting close to 400rwhp. underdrive pulley for a few hp, you will also need better springs, different length pushrods, probably larger injectors, as well as the necessary gaskets etc.

the 01 243 heads had regular valves. the 02+ 243 heads had the lightweight sodium and hollow valves and were a different length than the 01s.

He got a 99 LS1 block so it wont have the LS6 intake. But OP you should get the LS6 intake and the 243 heas (LS6 heads) and a nice 228 cam from Texas SPeed and and a good size stall and your good to go.

Ok, so the LS6 heads and intake is undesputed then. As for the intake on my '02 LS1, I actually have no idea if those are considered the LS6 as stock. Never heard that before. Yes, I do have the original LS1 engine currently in it but I chose not to molest it. It has 110k miles on it and runs nice and strong but unfortunately the #5 and #7 piston rings are shot. JUNK! Rather screw up an engine that isn't original.

Any suggestions on the springs? I've seen so many types. Confusing to me. I really appreciate your guys insight on this.

Call texas speed and get the 228r cam springs pushrods timing chain and oil pump.
Get rid of those damn shortys and buy longtubes.
Used stock ls6 heads
Ls6 intake.. All stock 01-02 ls1s should have one already.
Slp air lid
Tune

Are you an auto or manual? Auto needs a 3600+ converter and a trans cooler, they are both a must, period.

Should easily hit 400+rwhp.

What is your budget?

You need to remove the intake from the stock engine that came with your 02 ss and put in your new motor. Your car came from the factory with a ls6 intake.

get a lightweight flywheel, it makes a world of difference on your top end power, have the heads port and polished ($130-$160) u can mill the heads .030 for better compression but u will need pushrods that are .025 shorter (they dont make them .030 shorter), 1.8 roller rockers, 3 angle valve job makes the valve seats last alot longer, port an polish the throttle body ($40), dyno tune,228/228 112lsa is a pretty nice cam for the street IMO.

I don't think the 228r cam is all that compatable with shorty headers. I would get a custom cam for this application or at least one that contemplates shorty headers/stock manifolds.

Sorry guys, daughter had brain tumor removed on Monday so I've been preoccupied.
Budget is about $3500.
Trans is AUTO.
As of today, I think my car is going to be parked until the build is finished. Sucka because I really don't have all the money yet and it is my daily driver.
I appreciate everybody's advice. I appreciate it.
Lemons12, I feel like from your information my budget isn't large enough. But the information is more of what I was looking for.
Thanks
