Angry Guage sending unit ... why doesn't the manufacturer support us?

I did a search and found some other users having similar results.

Autometer guages have a sending unit that is 1/8" NPT.
An LS1 motor has ports machined in, but are 12x1.5 metric.

Sure there are adaptors, but the wall is so thin the adaptors twist off with MINIMAL torque ... minimal as in not enough for a crush washer to seal.

Why don't they make a 12x1.5 sender?????

The stock sender ohms out WAY different ... almost 1K ohms lower than the AM, so that rules out that possibility.

In case my search results were less than complete, can someone point me to a reasonable and workable solution, short of custom machining?

I read where one person drilled and tapped the water pump for 1/8 NPT with good results.

When I do a water temp guage, I am going to tap ito the water pump housing. There is a nice spot for it. If you look just to the left of the pully...right up on top there...that flat round pad. Perfect for a sender, IMO.

Similar thoughts have been juggled around.
I'd like to see some pics, if you have them.

What about an oil temp sender?

There is a place for an oil temp sensor right above the oil filter. That little block would have to drilled and tapped...you'll see what I mean if you look up there. I believe the ones on the Corvettes already have a plug in them that you can just remove. Otherwise you could drill and tap the oil pan...that thing is thick enough...

The block above the oil filter is where I have tapped in to send oil to a cooler. The adaptor has a port for an oil temp sender ... 12x1.5mm thread

I'd just go for the oil pan then...maybe put the sensor right next to the factory oil level sensor on the passenger side and run the wire with the factory wires to make it look stock...

There are ways to tap the pan w/o getting shavings in the oil...

Mitch just move the factory temp sender from the front drivers side head to the rear passenger side head. Then drill out the factory hole on the front drivers side for a 3/8 pipe and use the autometer adapter. This is what I did. You'll have to shorten the drill bit to about 2-3" long and use an anglehead drill to get at it, but it's doable. I also drilled and tapped the oil pan for my oil temp. This was before I got my LG Supercool radiator with the above the filter adapter with the oil temp port, not that I could've used this port anyway since you have to grind this part of the adapter down to get it on the car if you don't have headers with relocated/removed cats.

Thanks for the tips and suggestions ... all things we've looked at before ...but the question remains ...

The LS1 has been out since '97. It's not going anywhere.

HELLO AUTOMETER ... GIVE US A 12x1.5 SENDER, DAMMIT!!!!!

Mitch and everyone similarily situated,

I was just selecting SW gauges for oil & water temps and oil pressure. Same NPT pipe threads. SW does offer adapter kits to mount the sensors to our 12x1.5mm threads, but why? it obviously makes it a headache.

Possibly the SW adapters are heftier? I'll let you know when I receive mine.

SW pn for
Adapter for pressure senders: 1/8" NPT ID to M12x1.5 OD---114854

Nothing listed for temp sending units.

Regards
Steve

I agree..even if AM didnt supply each guage with the correct fittings, at least make a kit that we can buy to make them work...
