Default Texas Speed 224R 581/581 Cam

Does anyone know if this cam has an aggresive ramp on it? I've beat my head aginst the wall with the push rod length, and I know I have that correct, but it still sounds like a sewing machine. It did quite down some after I figured out the push rods.

I've read a lot about how LT Headers and a FAST intake can also add to all the valve train noise as well, still knowing all that, it still bugs me.

I know, I know, If I want it quite, leave it stock right? Or like one person told me, go buy a stock C6 ZO6 w 505hp and leave it alone.

Anyone with this same cam, please chime in.

I know on my comp 224 with the same lift its actually pretty quiet...7.375 pushrods. Lt headers do have a lot of chatter and tinging to them. Did you change lifters? Maybe they arent pumping up fully?

im running a 224/230 comp cam xer273 and i have a little sewing machine noise, but thats too be expected with the aggressive ramp rates of these bigger cams...i used 7.4 pushrods with stock 243s and i have been advised to use 7.375, but my motor is running good so id hate to change it...only fix would be to run an eps cam bc they are alot easier on the valvetrain for sure

The 224R is on an XE-R lobe, so it is pretty aggressive.

What combo are you running, and what PRs?

I think I ended up with Comp 7.350's useing a PR length checker and checking them about a dozen times on several cylinders.

I'm running TEA Stage 1 heads, LS7 lifters and stock rockers.

I'm thinking about swaping out the Cam for one with a less aggressive ramp rate.

It's the exhaust lobes that make most of the noise, If you go with XE-R intake lobes and XE exhaust lobes the XE lobes will quiet it down, but a 224(xe-r)/224(xe) cam will make less power.
Now if you're willing to go up higher in lift you can have you cake and eat it too!
224(.609"xfi)/226(.605"lxl), or 223(.610"lsl)/226(.605"lxl)
FYI, there's no 224 lxl lobe, the next lower lobe duration is 222.

also consider a thunder racing tr224 cam pkg.I hear the EPS 222/226 cam is quiet when it comes to valve train.

just curious what you are using are your preload target on the ls7 lifters. I have read more than once that you need at least .080 for a quiet valve train.

pushrod length consideration gets changed up when you use the ls7 lifters instead of the ls1 lifter thats for sure, iirc the ls7 is smaller which means pushrods need to be longer (that might be backwards someone will chime)

i haven't done my swap yet but from what I am reading people that are going to the ls7 lifter need a shorter pushrod to keep the .080 preload

Don't buy any push rods until you measure first. Buy an Comp Cams push rod checker, then buy your push rods. No one can tell you what length push rods to use until you measure first.

yep, thats why i didnt buy the standard 7.4s like everyone seems to think will work all the time. I keep reading about needing shorter ones with LS7 lifters. So when I finally do get ready to swap cams, I already have the length checker ready to go.

I did a cam only swap with a 224r cam, used 7.4 pushrods, and no noisier than stock.

You got lucky, when I picked mine up from the shop it was very noisey with 7.4's I was a little pised that the guy let it go out of his shop sounding that way, but it was a side job and a friend so you know...Anyway I ended up changing the lifters myself and after hours and hours of checking and rechecking my push rod length and three sets of push rods, I'm still noiesy, better than when I got the car back, but it's still there.

I'm thinking about going with a EPS 224/226 Cam. They seem to be addressing the "sewing machine" issue with their Cams.

I recently put in a 222/226 eps cam and it's still more noisy than stock. If you want stock noise you better leave the stock cam.

This is the best advice anyone can give on pushrods!
