Default slack in timing chain

well just got my cam retaining plate in from texas speed and got it installed finally got to put my timing chain gear on and timing chain just to find out that theres a lot of slack in the timing chain. so much that the cam probally moves a few degrees before i takes up the slack in either direction.

my set up its a 1999 5.3 truck block bored 20 over
new v2 cam from texas speed
stock crank that was checked by a machine shop
hd timing set ordered off here
not sure if the parts are wrong
has anybody else had this same problem? this is my first ls build so im not sure if thats normal or what?

slack in the chain for the most part is normal. im sure your fine. if you could post a video it would make it alot easier for us to help you determine weather its normal or not

did you bolt it all the way up? I went with slp double roller and the chain seemed loose until I tighten the bolts to spec. Is this a stock chain? Who made the chain and was it used?

Yea when I did my cam swap I though "wow I'm glad I got a new timing chain" bc my old one had a little slack, but after putting new ls2 on it, the chain still had the same amount of slack

A little slack is normal though, but double and triple check everything else...did you install a new cam and crank gear? Same amount of teeth and same diameter as the old ones? It's worth checking...and make sure you get dot to dot one the gears

That is WAY to much slack. Go to Autozone and pickup an LS2 chain for $40 or so.

iv built a few motors and none of them has had this much slack in them. i dont think i like the idea of spraying a 250 on it with the chain like that. i already have a melling oil pump so double roller isnt an option i just want a single roller that dont have a lot of slack in it.

I've got the same slack in my chain (150k mile motor), but I just saw another (supposed 40k mile) with the same slack. It wouldn't hurt you to be tighter though.

seems like more slack than i have seen but to be honest i have taken apart several LS2's that have near that much slack. then again these motors had 119k and 155k on them. I would just buy a dampener and a new stock LS2 chain and call it a day.

i got mine from yank in the deal they are running in the fs section, mine has every bit as much slack as yours does, you can always get the ls2 damper, or the c5r chain from katech
