Default I like what I've got just want more of it.

Here is what I have got, stock '04 LS1 from a vette, 241 heads, LS6 block and intake. I am installing it in a '63 Nova. It should be under 3000lbs when done easy. Tranny is an M6 and rear is f9 with 3.50:1 gears and 26" tall tires. LT headers, X or H pipe through Magnaflows.
This car will be a fair weather DD/cruiser/sleeper. I'm not interested in running the strip, maybe a little auto-x.

I have refreshed a lot of motors. I have never done any real mod's to a motor so I really do not know what I am doing. And I do not have funds to attend the school of hard knocks.

I like the stock operating range on the motor. I still want the stock idle. I just want more of it. What am I looking at to make 400-450 hp/tq? Can I get there changing rocker ratio? Head porting and or cam? Am I looking at a fairly aggressive cam and rhodes lifters?

Thanks for your advise.

Heads and cam. Bunch of streetable combos that can net you that goal. A 230 or so cam and some decent heads will net you that.

Cant get there by just changing rocker ratio. Really dont have to even touch the rockers unless you want to do the trunion upgrade from comp.

I like this thread, it answers many peoples questions. However, results are with 243's.

You'll definitely want the heads milled a ported, to keep a stock like idle and power band means a small cam, probably in the range of 214-224 on the intake lobes and 220-228 on the exhaust lobes. Id keep the LSA in the 112-115 range if possible, with +3 to +5 degrees of advance. I'd also go with the latest proven lobes to maximize you power potential. I'd also recommend you contact some of the sponsors to see what they think will work best for you. The largest cam I would suggest is a 224/224 114lsa +4 w/XFI lobes.

^^^this. Even check out a custom cam. Pat g can probably spec you a cam to make great low to mid power without giving up much on top, while still maintaining excellent sleeper idle/driveability properties.

Thanks Mr. Sir. I read this when I got home from work. Very impressive results. But after reading this thread it brings me to another question.
It is stated quite a few times that valve springs have a short lifetime with an aftermarket cam. Does this mean I will be pulling the heads off every 15-20k to check/change springs? Or are they fairly easy to change out by just removing the valve covers?

Springs are changed while motor in car, no need to remove heads. IMO stay away from harsh lobes there are other ones that are quite friendly. Lingenfelter is such a company that use such lobes (GT2-3)

While it would still be a good idea to check the springs every 15-20k miles, the EPS lobes are relatively stable. Spring life is more determined by how the springs are set up, if you floor it at every stoplight, race it all the time, etc. 15-20k is a blanket statement, and if it's more of a daily driver, occasional racing type car, I could see 35k before it'd start worrying me.

Thanks guys for all the input. I'm going to save some $$$ and find me a set of 243's or 799's and have them ported and polished. And then see about a custom cam.
