Default Possibly oiling issue?

My engine has a tap/knock noise thats pretty loud coming from the bottom end. However is very inconsistent sometimes its loud sometimes quiet and sometimes you can't heart it. If I rev the engine past 2000 rpms the noise goes away. I took a stethoscope and found its loudest directly beneath the crank pulley on the lip of the oil pan. my friends told me it is provably piston slap but what gets me Is its very inconsistent. So last night I tried amsoil and at first there was no noise I was all excited that it went away I left it running for a bit and came back to it and the tapping was back. so I'm wondering if its my oilpump because its where the noise is coming from and if I rev it and increase oil pressure it goes away. Btw at idle my oil pressure is reading over 40. My motor is also stock and has 120,000 on the clock. Anyone have a problem like this?

Hate to say it, but I think I'd drop the pan, take a good look at your bearings, and take the oil pump apart and look for wear in it too
