Default 450-500whp goal for LS1

Hey guys,

I disclaim that I have spent days searching on good packaged set ups but I guess it can be bad when I have too much info available to me...I still dont have a good plan, so I dare ask...

I have a stock LS1 swapped into my bmw M3 and I road race but still drive the car on the weekends. I believe its time to change it up becuase my head gasket is starting to give up. I plan on getting a bolt in oil baffle. I would like to get a packaged deal for heads and cam to make 450-500whp. I will combine it with a FAST 92, larger TB and MAF.

Any suggestions for a good reliable package deal that can give me good power throught the powerband. I still drive the car to meets and local errands so I am not looking for anything super aggressive .

Let me know your thoughts. I am a noob to the LS engines

If the prices get up there, I may just consider swapping in an LS2/LS3

Reaching your goal will be much easier with an LS2 or LS3, but it can be done with an LS1. Proper heads with a matching cam and intake will get you there. For heads, you can't go wrong with AFR, TFS or PRC. I'd say a set of AFR 215 or PRC 215 heads and a matching cam in the mid to upper 230 intake and lower to mid 240 exhaust will get you there. Contact Texas Speed. They sell the PRC 215 or PRC 227 heads and can set you up with a nice package deal. They are great guys to work with.

Thanks! I called them earlier and John said I can do the 215cc kit to get me right where I need to be. But the total cost to buy this awesome package, FAST intake, TB and MAf, would cost the same as getting a nice LS2...

Even with an stock ls2 you wont have 400 rwhp you'll still need mods to get to your goal with an ls2

i would find a fast setup used, you could find them at really good prices you just have to hunt for them,tech,ls1.com,craigs list etc, honest its ok to have that goal but a decent setup will make that car fly, texas speed has some very good prices with there prc heads , or you could send the heads you have on there to AI, again you might not hit 500 but you will have a decent setup, never shoot for a number, any killer heads are going to cost some cash.

Why would it be so much easier with an ls2?

If you arent going to daily drive it go all out. Big cam, big ported heads, fast 102/102 awesome tune, and full exhaust and 450-500 will be easy

LS6 intake and a nice ported heads/cam swap would probably get you there.

Doubt a stock intake will make more than the very bottom of his range. If 450 is acceptable, then yes an LS6 intake should do the job. If he's looking for closer to 500, the LS6 won't cut it and will choke out a nice set of heads capable of 500.

I agree go big and you'll get your goal no problem. I run a stock cube/ bottom end ls1 in my drag car with bolt ons minus a fast setup and an aggressive cam which made 430/ 409 to the wheels. That's through a stalled auto with a 12 bolt. I take it you will be running a manual trans? If so your goal will be that much easier

Get some quality heads and go from there. PM Tony Mamo
450 is definately in your reach, but 500 will be more challenging and you will have to sacrifice many things to extract that from an LS1 block.

Try contacting AI - could port your stock heads and match with one of their cams and get 450+ for not a lot of money. Getting to 500 would be easier with LS3 with more cubes and better head design.
