Default L33 vs. 99 LS1 cam

Can anyone tell me if it's worth it to swap my L33 cam with an LS1? I will be using an LS1 intake manifold and throttle body.

I read in another thread that they wouldn't be very different. I can't seem to find much info on the L33 cam.

Just google "chevy L33 gen 3/4 camshaft" and read all about duration and lift for all the LS based gen 3/4 chevy engines ,,,,,,,,,,,,,Wikipedia is helpful for the whole GM engine lineup for all the basic stuff , but some of the other sites will be LS1 tech so clicking on an LS1 tech site will take You directly to a thread about what You typed in .

Actually, there really is no info out there on the L33 cam... so If you've got something please post it up. I have been searching for a few weeks now. The most confirmed info I can find from GM is that the lift was increased from 11.6mm to 12.5mm , or in other words somewhere around .457" to 0.492" . Nowhere have I seen durations discussed, though I personally think that GM is suggesting that it may have the same durations (190/191) as a stock 5.3L truck cam from the same years, just a higher lift.

I can't find the exact specs on duration but the lift is .480 and duration is under 200 but higher than the regular 5.3 cam...I'm in the same boat as you with the l33...I'm going to swap mine for my stock 98 ls1 cam which is .500 lift and duration is 202/210...I don't have the cash for valvesprings and cam package

Wouldn't it be more beneficial to put the LS6 cam in?

Not in my case since I'm running a manual Trans and carbed so I need tightest lsa I can get and 115 lsa of ls1 cam is better than 117.5 on the ls6...plus ppl want too much for ls6 cams anymore...I wouldn't pay 250 for one Id rather spend 350 on something bigger

I guess in my opinion, swapping in an essentially free LS1 camshaft might be best for getting a truck engine swapped car project up and running and running with more "car-like" characteristics; the best part is with the L33 it works with the stock springs and pushrods.

Though I would agree that an LS6 cam would be a better choice, it actually costs money to do this one, so I would much rather skip this cam after a free LS1 cam setup and go straight for a big duration/lift setup with real hardened pushrods and springs.

Anyone else with me on this one? I'm working along with the OP on his project...

By the way, I have reason to believe that the 98,99,00 is not the 202/210 116LSA you see posted frequetly ... I have seen more reputable sources say its 198/208 119.5LSA

Don't take my word for truth, but everywhere I have seen minus a few of the "top search result" google websites say it's the lower duration. But still supposedly a better cam than the 01/02.

For what it might be worth, I was given an ls1 cam out of '98 Pontiac and I purchased a "pull out" early LS6 cam and springs ($75.00). I have a 2002 LM7.

My brother builds his toys using a $400.00 computer program used to predict HP. The computed HP figures are not unreliable; but, the relative predicted behavior of different cam shafts is reliable.... or so he claims. His program predicts the earlier z06 cam is worth only 24hp over the stock LM7 and the 98 LS1 was 18 hp. But, and this was his point. The Ls1 out performed the z06 through 5500 rpm. Not too shabby for a completely free piece.

Bear in mind that any aftermarket ls1 cam will out perform the Z06.

The Ls1 and Ls6 manifolds look good, but the butt ugly truck manifolds have the reputation of running right with them until you hit 6K or so.

If you are paying labor to replace the cam, really consider spending a few dollars more for an aftermarket camshaft.

My six bits of opinion. Yeah, I went with the z06.... my closing argument to my self was I would bolt on a truck supercharger, radix or something.

G

Personally,
