Default LQ4 105k????

Well here we go........Pulled the heads off the 105k 2004 denali lq4 and this looks like ****. and that oil in there is tranny fluid WTF??? Why? It has a 90 day warranty so i'll just bring it back and get another if this is shot. It spins freely no problem at all. But this looks like hell to me anyways....

Did it have an intake manifold on it when you got it? I'd think possibly someone sat a torque convertor on top of it and some fluid ran down in the intake port on the head. From the pictures, that looks about how I would expect for a 105k mile pull out? The carbon is normal, clean it out with a rag with brake parts cleaner on it, so you can see the condition of the cylinder wall. I don't see any rust in the photos, or anything else abnormal? I've only pulled a few of these apart in my life and not really an expert, but yours looks similar to what I have seen, except for the trans fluid. Have a local shop take a look at it if your in doubt? I think what you have, may be a diamond in the rough, that carbon can make things look bad.

well thats a good thing to hear. I pulled my ls1 apart and it looked amazing compared to this. The intake actually was on top of the motor it was complete when i took it from the yard. I just was a little worried when i looked at it how nasty it was. Im new when it comes to all this and just seeing this compared to my other motor shocked me. And the transmission fluid is so weird i will call and ask why that was in two of the cylinders. Thanks for clearing it up with me haha

I've seen people drain the oil out of w motor that is going to sit and put tranny fluid in it...even fill it all the way to the top of the valvecovers....high detergent and prevents rust? Not sure hoe it would work on rubber/plastic parts though

Take the rear cover off and pull the barbell out....see if it has any hunk built up on it.
Believe it or not I've seen engines with a lot more buildup than yours that once cleaned up turned out to be really nice

oh and the guy at the yard told me the transmission fluid is from them. He said they use trans fluid to lubricate it when its sitting haha i said why wouldnt you use just motor oil...but well thats strange but at least i know.

What'd you use to to clean it all up? Looks great. Going to rebuild, or run as is?

I don't mean to jack the thread, but my lq4 looked just like that. I got it cleaned up and one cylinder has one little discoloration place in the wall. About an inch long. You can't feel anything, only see it. Everything else is perfect. Should that be anything to worry about?

About the best I could get on my way out the door this morning. It set up for a few months, rotating assemply spins great. I cleaned some debris out from the clean up and soaked the cylinders in WD40 to prevent rusting while waiting on parts. WD40 emptied out of this cylinder in about 8 hours with it about half full. It's not scored or anything. Smooth to the touch.

Looks good.

Are you sure that isn't a LQ9. In a denali it should be a LQ9 not a 4.

From here it looks more like stains in the cylinder....if you feel the need you could drop the crank and pistons and run a hone down through it real quick, but I don't think you need to

That's exactly what it looks like, I just didn't know what would have caused it.
