Default father and son budget build need help!

Hello I'm an older car guy and a newbie to ls engines ! I have a lq4 that I picked up Friday and its in bad shape! Had a blown head Gasket ( I thought) but found a spot on the heads were a 1/4 inch of material was missing ! Anyways I'm not gonna fix them! Here's my question. A friend gave me some 853 heads with beehive springs fresh 5 angle valve job ...but they have been milled 30 thousandths . I think that puts them around 62cc. Not sure! He gave me a 228/228 comp cams. Can I use this heads without any ptv clearance issues? I don't have the extra money for 799 or 243 heads and I've done searches so any help at all would be appreciated!

You should be fine with that size cam on PTV but it never hurts to check with a dial indicator to be safe.

Good luck! I hope to have a project like this here a few years with one of my kids

I second the GM mls gaskets. You should have a peppy little combo there

You cannot use MLS gaskets with an 853 head if it has the "notch" I'm not at my computer so I can't post a pic of what I'm talking about but some 853's have the notch some don't.

If your's have the notch, you have to use composite gaskets.

when you get your composite gasket
might as well size the crush thickness for a better quench
definitly mock it up with some clay
do a search for the optimal quench
i believe .035 to.041

running those 853 with an lq4 is going to bring
your compression up quite a bit i would think
and a tighter quench will help

I'd even go tighter, .030-.035"

.030 is pushing it for piston to head clearance when everything is hot and spinning fast, but gives a lot of detonation reduction and let's you get closer to the edge of max power vs reliability.

I found a pic of the "notch" ! Why would they even cast that in the head? Does it have a purpose?

Can you post it? Is it something that can be milled out?

It's not put there for a reason per se, it's part of the sand cast procedure used to cast the heads...later on in the year they switched to a SPM casting method which didn't have the notch and gave the entire head a Styrofoam looking texture.

Thanx again guys for all your help! But I have another question. Which head Gasket do I use? Will the fel pro 9199pt work ? Or do I need to get ls1 gaskets that have a right and a left?

Well the guy who sold me the 6.0 felt bad and hooked me up with a aluminum 5.3 and it has 799 heads on it so I'm taking the springs and everything else off the 853 heads and putting them on those! Thanx again everybody !
