Default New Springs needed for 1.8 HS Rockers?

Do I NEED to replace the springs if I go with the 1.8s to get a little extra hp out of the car. Now that I'm around 450 at the flywheel, I'm getting nervous about the valvetrain breaking, so I really want to get a set of these. Problem is I've already blown the mod account for this year (& then some) so I'm looking to save a little $. I know when I install a bigger cam in 2 years, I'll need to go back to 1.7s, and I plan to heads at the same time, so springs & retainers etc will be included. But what about now? Can I just go with the HS's & a nice set of pushrods? I have an A4 with the shiftpoints set at 6000, and the rev limiter set at 6190....

Thanks
Mark

I'd save your money or buy a cam kit instead of the rockers. Buck for buck, you can't beat a cam. Just switching from a 1.7 to a 1.8 rocker with a stock cam is a waste of money in my opinion.

and if you still want them then yes you'll need new springs. valvetrain isnt some place to skimp on. especially in the spring compartment. you install the rockers and use stock springs to save a bit of money then what happens when a spring breaks and you your engine. wheres the cost savings in that. pick up some 918's or the manley kit.

Thanks jrp, that is what I'm asking. Are the springs as weak as the rockers? Or the pushrods? Or will the higher lift from the 1.8s create a problem with the stock springs? I don't want to spend $500 to make my motor stronger only to find out that those parts I saved $200 on were just as weak....

heres what i'd do:

HS 1.8's
Manley kit that comes w/ tit. retainers
hardened PR's

should keep your vavle train lightened and stronger and should have no problem lasting for 2yrs until you want a new cam.

Either way cam, or 1.8 you will want to do the springs and pushrods...The rockers aren't really a bad mod for the money...Easy to do, plus you can probably sell them when you want to upgrade to your cam...
BTW I do have a set of 918s about 2k on them, still look new, $100.00 shipped in the original box if your interested.

No offense, but used valvesprings really aren't somethig you should use. Cams fall into the same category. You just don't know what you're getting. Of course, its better since the advent of roller cams.

Regardless, I'd skip the rockers and save up for a cam and valvesprings.

No offense taken...I have reservations with used parts in general, and online purchases...But its pretty easy to check a valve spring for wear...Used cam I agree, I wouldn't unless the thing still looked brand spankin new...Guess the 1.85 rocker is just a matter of preferance...Because of simplicity of install and the manditory valvetarin upgrade, it kind of paves the way for a cam when you are ready for it...With bolt ons (headers/intake) 15-20 rwhp is not far off.

I'd agree. Most folks don't have any way to check valve spring pressures.
