All depends on what you find when you disassemble the engine. Typically a broken rod will cause a lot of internal damage from swinging around.
Are you sure it is broken or is it just a wiped rod bearing that is knocking? If the later, you can probably get by with a rebuild using most of your old parts after some machine work. If the rod snapped, a new or used replacement engine might be your best bet.
If you are on a tight budget, a 5.3 might be a cheap option.

Gen 3 5.3l's are cheap which is what your 2000 engine computer is made for. (assuming its original to the car).
You get to choose between an iron or alum version. The iron would be the LM7 which is vin t and z in all of the GM trucks.
Keep in mind....you arent sticking any pistons larger than 3.905 in a 5.3l block later on down the road(iron version) and you cant even bore the alum blocks.
I picked my (2) lm7's up for $500 for the pair last year while i was down in Oklahoma City. One is getting bored to LS1 specs and put in my 85 vette.
