Default pitted piston questions

I bought an lq9 a couple weeks ago and barely started digging into it. Not liking what I've found so far. I pulled the driver side head and found the pistons are pitted pretty good. The very back one is the worst and the 3rd cylinder wall has a nice sized spot of discoloration. What causes a piston to pit like this and how should I go about rebuilding this? I plan on swapping this into my 91 s10 blazer and just want a basic rebuild, nothing too major. I can't get the cylinder wall pic to load but I'll retry it. Any help is greatly appreciated.

ive seen pitting exactly like that in burnt engines. ive bought a few fire motors from the junkyard for parts seems they get that way from water in the cylinder.

I did notice some water draining when I pulled the head. Another question, is this an lq4 because the pistons are dished? I was told it was an lq9 when I bought it.

Can anyone identify what year my engine would be from? Also if I just get some used lq4 pistons to swap in would i need to get everything balanced? If so I may just upgrade everything now. Any advice on the cylinder wall too? Do i need to get it bored or would honing it be enough.

thats a pre 05 motor due to the style of connecting rods the 05+ rods are a bit stronger and use floating pins those are press fit pin rods. any time you swap any internal component with another definately get it rebalanced it may hone out try it and see how the walls look personally i would run those pistons you will be fine just throw on some hellfire rings and some arp rod bolts and your ready to roll
