Default Pete Jackson gear drive for LS1

I noticed in the new Jegs that Pete Jackson is making gear drives for the LS1, since I am going back into my engine I am thinking about ordering one. Has anyone tried one yet? With a gear drive thats just one less thing to worry about....

I always heard a gear drive would cause false knock on a LS1. Don't think anyone has really tried it to know for sure, though. If someone has, it must have been a custom piece.

I'm looking in my latest Jegs catalog and I don't see a Pete Jackson gear drive for the LS1. I see one listed for SBC EXCEPT LT1, LT4 and LS1 but nothing specifically for the LS1. And I don't see how a gear drive could be used. The knock sensors would go crazy.

I remember way back in highschool there was a kid that had a 1979 Z28 with a stock 350 and TH-350 trans. He had a Pete Jackson gear drive machined for noise(at that time you could buy them that way, I don't know if you still can or not); so it sounded like blower whine. Everyone thought it was the toughest car in school because of the sound, until my 1984 Camaro with a stock LG4 305 4bbl Quadrajunk , performance built TH700-r4(completely built up, equivilant to a Level 4l60e today) and an Auburn posi w/ 3.73 gears...laid the smack down on his Z28's a$$! If you are using the geardrive for a real purpose like keeping your motor's timing accurate(preventing the issues caused by a chain stretching)it's cool but if you're one of those schmucks that want the noisey version so your weaka$$ car sounds blown....then forget it

I had 2 of them a couple of years ago, a noisy one on a 355 sbc, then a quiet one on my 468ci bbc, and the quiet one on the bb was way louder than the other. They are nice pieces, but like others are saying I'd check into the nock sensors picking them up as false knock. I wouldn't think they would because the sound would be more like loud valvetrain if anything. They may have improved them for our engines, putting small holes or different tolerances between the teeth to allow the air to escape. Definately be worth checking out, I can see it now people will be accusing me/fast ls1 cars of running a SC at the track instead of nitrous now lol

Just go with the Jesel belt drive, you can change cam timing without having to remove the front cover.

aren't the belt drives a little risky for a daily driver?

I don't know how anyone could daily drive something with a loud *** gear drive on it. That would be like torture for me.

From the Illustrated Sourcebook of Mechanical Components:

BELTS
While the supercharger drive, racing application is highly visible and glamorous, the same polyurethane belt is used in industry to replace roller chain on a wide variety of applications. Roller chain requires lubrication and regular maintenance in order to perform at its peak level. Roller chain can stretch up to 3% of its length over the life of the chain. The Kigh capacity, polyurethane synchronous belt provides superior horsepower capacity, with virtually no stretch.

Additionally, no lubrication is necessary with the synchronous belt. The lack of lubrication allows the polyurethane synchronous belt to replace roller chain on applications where cleanliness is necessary to prevent contamination of product.
...
One of the advantages of synchronous belts is their very high efficiency.
...
Even though properly maintained V-belts drives can run as high as 95-98% efficient at the time of installation, this often deteriorates over time by as much as 5% during operation. Poorly maintained V-belt drives may be up to 10% less efficient. Synchronous belts remain at an energy efficiency of around 98% over the life of the belt.

I can't find the reference right now, but I believe chains are just as efficient (maybe 1% less) as synchronous belts, and gears are at least 2% less efficient.
