Default Cam this Nova

Hey Guys/Gals,

After weeks of researching I still cannot find a cam I can bring myself to purchase. This is going into a stock 98' ls1.

The car is a 62 nova, full cage, t56, Jag IRS.

My Plans:

Cruise this summer. I want a driver with more than stock power. In the future (this next winter) I wish to turbo. I am at school and have no available tuning shops. I do eventually plan on doing the tuning on my own. (Getting my masters in Engineering)

Therefore, I want a cam that makes good power in the upper rpm range, has the possibility of accommodating turbo(s), can drive reasonably on stock tune, and not have ptv worries.

Parts I have now. Jesel Shaft mount rockers, .650 springs with ti retainers, rod bolts, oil pump, timing chain, pushrods will be ordered when length is determined, various gaskets. I can get a set of 241 heads for free, "good" heads will be a year or so down the road as well as intake.

I autocross, beat the living sh*t out of it, and want to see some road course action eventually.

ls6 cams seem to work well with turbo's but I am afraid I will be unimpressed and regret it. I want something with usable power to around 7000.

Thanks!

I'm guessing its right around 3000. It's a centerforce clutch

I think I'd call EPS or Texas Speed for a recommendation. That's one awesome build you've got there, and if you're like me coming from old-school SBC's you'll never look back.

I'd also post in the Forced-Induction section.

Regardless of which cam you go with I'd at least get a mail order tune.

Looks like I'll be doing a mail order tune as well. Looking for around 400 horse. What are the limits on lift for stock heads, clearance, etc.?

Since you wanting around 400rwhp and go turbo with the same cam it's going to be a compromise. You don't want to go too big since you'll want to keep the overlap down for the turbo, now if that 400hp is at the flywheel that shouldn't be a problem.
BTW if you're willing to go with more aggressive lobes you'll get more power out of a smaller cam.A good option is to go with some Comp Cams LXL lobes (boost friendly),maybe like a 226(.605")/226(.605") 114lsa. That'll keep overlap down (-2*), and will still make good power before the turbo build.
Or the option I sent in you PM.

you. must. post. more. picture!!! Sweet build man im so jealous. Sorry not enough experience with turbo cams to make a good call for you but the cam right above seems like it would work well for your setup. I dont think that cam will make power to 7000 like you want.

Yeah, with that cam I'd run it advances 2-4* for now, then when you get the turbo on run it straight-up with no advance and that'll bring you power band up 100-200rpm. I'm not sure what lobes the SI TU1 uses (possibly XER), but(IMO) I'm sure the LXL lobes would most likely work better.

Well that also depends on how well his intake and heads flow, my 227/231 111+2 lsa cam can pull to 7k with very little hp drop.
