Default What is going on with my motor, Catch can full of oil !

So I just rebuilt my motor, new piston rings, bearings, heads and cam by AI. I have about 2000 miles on the motor.

I tried the following for PCV. It has always drank oil, before and after the motor rebuild.

Old motor

- ls1 valley cover, rev extreme catch can

New motor

- ls6 valley cover and pcv routing, no catch can. intake covered with oil

- same but with catch can. catch can full of oil

Now I have about 300 miles on the oil change, its a quart low, I drained my pcv and it filled a half of a paint can top full.

Should I switch to a breather setup? If so does this give off alot of fumes.

When you switched to a LS6 valley cover, did you use a LS6 PCV as well?

If the valley cover is for a 2004 model year or newer, then there is no actual "PCV valve" so to speak. They started using a 1 mm orifice that is built into the nipple on the valley cover.

If using an LS6 valley cover from a pre-2004, then he will need the PCV valve between the catch can and intake manifold. Maybe the OP has the pre-2004 valley cover and doesn't have the PCV valve at all in the system. Need more info to know.

It sounds like the OP might have a ring blow-by issue, which causes too much crankcase pressure and forces lots of oil vapors through the PCV system. If you remove the dipstick at night and have someone rev the engine while you look at the opening of the dipstick tube, do you see lots of vapors coming out the tube?

I bought the kit from thunderracing with the pcv valve in the rubber hose. I will check on the vapors. The fluid that came out of the catch can is pure oil.

Could I have my catch can hooked up backwards? Does it go from the pcv to the intake or valley cover?

I dont have my pcv in the valley cover so my catch can has one. I had it so it went from the valley cover to the non pcv port of the catch can then out of the catch can where the pcv port to the tb. So looking at the diagram it was connected wrong correct?

So basically my pcv valve was on the side of the catch can going to the Intake. Does this sound like I had it wrong?

This is the diagram I had been searching for.
It was part of a series of diagrams, detailing the various PCV setups.
Thanks.

If there are no outlets/nipples on the valve covers for the PVC system fresh make-up air, then you could run a breather filter that installs in the oil fill hole on the valve cover. Strange that the valve covers don't have the oultet ... must be for "racing only use".

So how do you have your PCV system configured?
