The LS7 block never seizes to amaze me. A block capable of 700-800HP (flywheel) that only weighs 107lbs bare.

I thought that I read that the 6.0 iron block was around 85 lbs more than an LS1 block and the LSX was around 125 lbs more. Guess I was wrong. Thanks for the information.

Yeah, everyone has generally accepted the alum/iron diff was about 85 or so, but now we know.

Hio - I would thin near the LS7 within 10 pounds. I don't have either of those around the shop. I do have an ERL modified 5.3 aluminum block, maybe I will check that one after lunch.

I have a bare LS6 block shipping my way today. It's being shipped to my work. We happen to have a calibrated airfreight scale. When it arrives I'll weight it and post here.

Hey Guys,

I know my method is probably not as accurate as Kurt's shipping scale, but I weighed a stock LS1 block (with main caps in place) awhile back. Here is a picture:



I then weighed a stock LQ4 block that I am using to replace the LS1:



The difference was almost exactly 100 lbs.

Here is how I was weighing them:

Damn, 110lbs on the nose of the car is a pretty big difference especially when guys are spending over a thousand dollars in suspension parts to drop ~50lbs.

Tubular k member and some weight reduction on the front end will easily make up that 110 lbs. However, in my opinion, the power potential of the iron block makes up for the added weight.

I'm not coo.g to complain about the extra weight of the iron block....but good post, I had always been told 85-87 lb difference too, but what's 25 more pounds when your talking insurance lol

Thread is stuck, stickied, stook, whatever.....there was a link somewhere that shows the LS1 and LS2 to be within 1-2 pounds of the LS7.

The extra hundred pounds is a lot but I think the extra power would make up for it. Isn't the rule of thumb every 100 pounds lost is like gaining 10 HP? If so, that 100 pounds in the iron block is well worth it for the extra power and strength. For an auto X car it may not help with the extra weight on the nose. But for the street and drag racing it should be just fine. And there is plenty weight saving stuff you can do like mentioned above - tubular k member, tubular control arms, A/C delete, battery relocate, etc
