think i set the timing incorrectly. if so how do i set the cam dot with the crank sprocket if the rollmaster sprocket doesnt have any dots but an upper and lower timing number value instead? i used the zero value on the outer as the "dot"

The part you asked about drives the oil pump. It is rather important. It slides on after the gear.
On the bottom gear, to go dot to dot, you use the 0 keyway on the crank key. The dot on the cam gear will align with the 0 on the gear teeth.
You will have #1 piston at TDC, the dot on the cam gear pointing down at the bottom by the crank gear.
Are the heads off?
Are you going to degree the cam?
