Default Head Gasket for 853 heads?

Is it absolutely necessary to use graphite head gaskets when installing 853 heads??

Or can you get away with MLS head gaskets?

Yes I know the 853 heads have a notch cast into them thus reducing the surface area for the head gasket to seal to. And that this is the commonly held reason for using the graphite gaskets with the 853 heads. I'm just wondering if this is actually a valid reason for using them as opposed to MLS gaskets.

If you plan to spray don't use a graphite gasket.

If the 853 is the original heads used back in 97-98, you have to sue the graphite gasket. Any of the other gaskets will not seal where those notches are in the heads. I had a 1998 and learned it the hard way.

I have 853 heads & used the MLS gaskets meant for these heads & they worked just fine.

I think there are some 853 heads that do not have the cut out notches, so you can use an MLS with no issue.

Mine had the notches & you can see where the gasket has a spot for it on #3 & #5 cyl.

Kinna like the old wifes tale about the ARP rod bolts....
