heads
I have been wondering recently if it is better to buy a set of new heads or just take my 243's and have them ported and polished
what are the advantages to buying a set TSP heads vs reworking mine?

The only difference between buying ours vs porting yours is a few hundred bucks for the cost of the castings. Also if you port yours, of course, you've got a used head that is ported rather than a brand new head that we can warranty should anything happen to the casting because of a defect in it.

I just called the shop I get all my machine work done at and they told me $500-$800 to port and polish...

porting does not equal porting. A ported head can be anything from completely ruined to an amazing addition to performance or anything in between, and especially when getting into something like these cathedral ports I would want someone with a proven track record. No way in hell would a waste a pair of castings on a shop that is accustomed to doing 202 fuelie heads or something like that.
That is not to say a local shop can't do good work, I just would not assume they can do it right just because they gave me a price.
Also with port injection IMO it is more important than ever that ports be as similar as possible, meaning CNC. With a carb or TBI is a port is good or bad it didn't mess with the AFR as much because the air and fuel were already mixed. With port injection and bank to bank tuning a cylinder that has a really good port will be lean compared to the others and what happens is number 7 which is already damage prone?
Also if they actually said port and polish that would make me uneasy.

Just to throw this in their
I called tsp today. After asking questions about porting my 241s I have in the car now. Adding up the cost for the port work, valves, springs and shipping their and back I would probably be at the same cost of just buying a set of the 2.5 5.3 heads at $1230 a set. They told me 950 for the Cnc port work and valves. Then I'd spend whatever the springs and seals are. Around 250 I think maybe more. U do the Math.
I think after lookin at the situation I'm gonna try to save the coin for the new heads and have a new casting. I'm on a seriously tight budget at the moment and the car is down do to a lifter failure. I also ruined a valve stem and rocker so I have to fix it and this seems like the best deal. Hopefully I can come up with the $ soon. I'm not really feeling my truck but don't wanna damage the car any more than it is

I agree with everything you said and I know the shop does good work being they mainly only deal with camaros and mustangs but I also thought about the money and also no down time with new heads I can throw it all together in a weekend instead of waiting

My main goal right now is 550whp and I will be happy for a while until I feel the need to go boost but it is gonna be a while before I get the heads and cam because I am having to buy a mobster stg3 clutch now since my ls7 clutch took a crap on me over the weekend

With that heads and cam package, you will be around 440-450whp. Even if you add a FAST 92 or 102mm with a throttle body, you will be around 475-480. No way you will be anywhere close to 550. Its a incredible feat to get 500whp off a H/C/I on an LS1. You would need forced induction and would need to completely redo your build as the ported 243s and that cam will not fair well with boost. Do your research on past threads.

Guys I don't need boost I got a bottle sitting in the shed that's all I need for 550whp on the LS6
But no I am also looking into a 383 stroker and and I am doing some research on what fuel system I will want to go with

If u use the bottle the ms3 cam would be better than ms4 and if u go with 383 either send 243's to ai or tea if u buy new heads either prc,afr or trick flow around 215cc intake

You are all making good points my main reason for wanting the ms4 is because I don't want to have to touch the bottle but I will still be happy with 450-470 off spray this is my project for next year right now I am still figuring out what is done to this car being I am 2nd owner and I. Am confident i can pull it down into low 12's with good tires like I have now my last 1/4 was a 13.1 at 113 spinning through third on stock rear end and crappy tires now I am 4.10 and eating position with NT05's
