Default Should I consider new valve springs?

I have about 45,000 miles on Comp 918 springs and I'm wondering if I should replace them. Cam is a TR224. I've never had an issue with them. I don't like fixing things that aren't broke but I don't like replacing engines either.

it would be a good idea to pull some off and verify pressures... it also wouldnt be a bad idea to just pull them and replace them... i personally prefer the PSI beehive over the 918's, but it seems you have had success with the 918's

Well if I pull a few to check I may as well go ahead and pull them all and replace them.

Ryne, why do you like the PSI beehive over the 918's? What other springs would you consider? I feel like Comp quality control has been falling off a bit in recent years. I'd be interested to hear your opinion too Matt.

We like the PAC beehives. The 1218's would do great for that one, and they work with your existing hardware!

By hardware you mean retainers and locks?

Ive heard too many stories about the PACs, especially here lately on the boards. I used the beehive 918s with that exact same cam in my first LS1 for many miles. I would definitely replace them for sure. You'll be fine with another set of 918s, they dont have the problems in these new era 918s as the other ones did a few years back.

Yes, same seats, seals, locks, retainers as your 918's use!

I just had a friend do the same thing on my Dad's 99. Had about 35K on 918's and replaced them with PAC 1218's. He didn't pressure test the old ones, as was pointless at that point, but he did say they had a slight sag of maybe 80-90 thousandths. I also had the plugs swapped right away while in there and taking the old ones out. Haven't driven yet, prob no noticeable differerence, just peace of mind.

Yep the aftermarket springs are brittle and not meant for longevity that's for sure...I'm running comp 918s on a 224/230 and they have been good for 2k but at your mileage it's a cheap easy move for insurance...

Not to highjack the thread but i have the comp 918s aswell and probably have around 20k miles on them with the crane 1.82 rockers and a stock cam, would it be advised to change them aswell?

They have lived their life, time for replacement. PSI 1511 would be an upgrade.

What would the PSI 1511 offer that the 918's don't? Any springs out there that last 50K?

With a stock cam I would not worry about 20K miles.

For the OP and 45K mileson an aftermarket cam with more aggressive lobes and lift, and rpm they should have been changed long ago.

Picked up the 918's today. Figured I'd go with what I've been using.

Installed the 918's. That took much longer than expected. All the retainers were stuck and centering the new springs was a pain. I ender up using the trick flow spring compressor and I had to drill out the holes to accomodate the studs. Here's the valvetrain all buttoned up. All is well.
