Default If running a "tightly" milled head and big cam, please come in..

As all builds start, this was supposed to just be a head/intake swap. Well, I have just received calls about side-jobs so it looks like a little more money is coming my way..

I just bought a set of Patriot stage2, 243's milled to 59cc. My current cam is a 224/230 Comp with .581 i/e on a 114. I've never been totally happy with the idle of the car but love the low-end the smaller cam gives. I'm starting to really think about swapping cams while I'm in there, one that is on my mind pretty heavy is the MS3. Everyone who has it seems to love it..

My question is for you guys who are running similar milling and bigger cams, how much did you have to fly cut?? People were already telling me I was going to be tight with the Comp. I understand that I will have to check clearance, thats not a problem. I just don't know how much effect a head milled to 59cc is going to have with a cam this size. Thanks ahead of time..

I'm gonna be running a cam similar to the MS3 and I was told by a few people that with milled 243s and a thinner head gasket to flycut .080 intake and exhaust. I'm in the market for some tools do do it myself so if you wanna split the cost and share the tools let me know.

My friend has the tools so I'll probably just let him do it.. I really wasn't planning on cutting that much but will look to see what is normal I guess.

If I remember right about .125" is max depth for cutting stock pistons.

just measure and cut till you have the clearance you need, Might as well cut .08 or .1 right away though. thats not that tight of a setup and you will have plenty of room with cutting. I have enough room and its way tighter than that

You would need to check. You might be able to get away with a .040 or .060" cut intake only.

I had 5.3 heads milled to 58cc and an ms4 cam, there is no way it was going to fit. I ended up changing the pistons.

Those heads with an ms3 would still crash the valves. I can 99 percent affirm that.

Pretty sure I've read that Patriot used to sell 59cc LS6 heads that were actually 317s with welded up then recut with the smaller chambers. There's a chance these might not have been milled to hit that chamber size. Worth looking into.

I don't care to cut, but don't want to have to change pistons. I'll definitely ask about the chambers being cut though..

you wont have to change pistons, mine are cut .130 and my heads are milled over .100, and my cam has more interference than a MS3. you wont need to go near that far

I'm running 59cc chambers,.040 cometics and a MS4 cam. I'm running the -2cc
Diamond pistons at 11.5 to 1. I have no idea how deep -2cc reliefs are.

After reading the last 3 posts, I'm not so scared to run a big cam anymore. You guys are letting her fly..

I would like to know though how much the -r reliefs relate to on a cut though. It would kinda atleast give me an idea..

.04 is roughly 2cc, .08 is roughly 4cc. Cut as deep as you feel you will ever need, AKA just cut to .100 and get it over with. The piston is .225" thick in those areas so its still strong enough for a 200 hit of nitrous at that thckness

I'm pretty sure I'll be running the .041. Atleast thats what I was told to do to keep compression up. Whats your compression at with the 5.3's??

Just what I was looking for. Surely if I cut .1 I should be in the clear and have ne problems with clearance.

just FYI I like the stock GM MLS at .05x thick as a pair is only $40 from any dealership, cometics are expensive. Take another cut off the heads and run the thicker gasket
