you are mistaken... bottom is way easier.....but you have to have a few things first...
need lots of upwards space...
a lift helps greatly

simply put....you unplug all the engine and trans harness stuff...
do the normal fluids draining and water hose/vacuum line/AC line disconnecting
unbolt your transmission and support it with a jackstand
or completely remove transmission first
unbolt your k-member...3 bolts per side
unbolt the strut tower
raise the car up slowly...either use a cherry picker to lift the nose of the car, or use a lift to pick up the entire car
whole front suspension should come out with the engine

I've helped do dozens of motors this way..including my own

this is what it should look like(this picture we had already gotten the motor and trans out of the way)

In the book "How to build high-performance Chevy LS1/LS6 V-8s" there is a detailed chapter with pics on this procedure. Book is by Will Handzel.

I have done it many times from the top (no lift). Just have to remove the trans and all the stuff from the front of the engine. Good thing is you never have to bleed the brakes!

Ive done it both ways, and I can honestly say its not difficult either way, just make sure everything gets disconnected and unhooked before you start droping it out.

This is the best write up by far. I have done it so many times now that I don't really need it but I still use it as a guide line sometimes and to check back at to verify I'm not for getting anything

Easy as hell going out the bottom... There's a good write up on here that I followed and it went flawless. I did it without a lift and used a engine hoist to pick up the car, took me about 4 hours to get everything ready to drop out.
