Default 114k mi, swapping heads a bad idea?

I've got 114k on my LS1 in my track only, roadracing FRC. This winter I had planned on changing the rockers and springs, and maybe just putting a LS2 timing chain, ported oil pump, and LS6 Intake on the car, then take it racing next year. Of course I got greedy and considered doing some more power mods, and ended up buying heads off an LS6, and was looking for a stock LS6 cam. After talking to some friends, now I'm wondering if I did the right thing. 2 guys who were serious drag racers back in the LT years, both who had built multiple engines, are telling me do not just change the heads without doing the bottom end. All fine and good, but doing the bottom end on this C5 is going to require a lift and some serious time tearing the car apart, and it just wasn't in my plan. I could just stick to my original plans, and save these heads for a later build when I have more time and money, but what do you guys think? Seems like guys change heads a lot, but road course work is pretty hard on the motor, with a lot of time at high RPMs, so I'm leery.

Yea the bottom ends in LS cars are far superior to LT cars that's for sure...there are tons of people swapping top ends and leave the bottom end alone...for example I just swapped the top end on a 200k+ mile 5.3 and the cylinder walls still had factory cross hatching....

Bottom line is if I were you I wouldn't even bother with the bottom end you will be fine...unless you got the extra cash ($1000) to redo it properly...good luck

you have low miles .if ur bottom end is good, you can go all out on the tope ends and make good power without hurting your bottom end

Yhe you should be fine but why go ls6 cam? Research on getting a bigger cam that will compliment the ls6 heads better.

I'm not dead set on the LS6 cam, just seemed like the cheap and sure option. I'm open to any recommendations. It's important to make power in the 4000 to 6500 range, usually not dropping out of there. 400hp is about the max I want to make, beyond that the car gets harder to drive and I'd most likely have to add weight for NASA ST2 anyway so it's wasted.

I would say look into the TSP 228r cam or even the Torquer v3 cam for that application. Both have a decent size power band...might get a little more torque with the 228r. Definitely research cams a little more. You already went through the trouble of getting the heads..get the right cam to compliment it.

Or get a cam guru to custom grind a cam for you. It will be more expensive, but well worth it.

If you have an frc vette you already have an ls6 intake, and you probably already have 241 heads which are very similar to the ls6 heads. I would just recommend a 228 cam and dual valve springs

114k is nothing. Put a good cam with some good heads in that thing and dont look back just make sure you get all the supporting mods....try and replace everything you can while your in there.
