Default What combo to cure my LS1's asthma

i just got my heads and cam done, and need to get a tweak only tune to help the idle. I figured that I may need a retune, and wanted to maybe help her breathe a little better than the stock 2002 Firehawk Blackwing lid, stock MAF and throttle body, along with the LS6 intake. So what is the best combo to improve this, and/or what would be the most logical and inexpensive?

Fast 92 intake with 85mm GM MAF and 98mm Fast Toys lid or

Keep the LS6 intake and Blackwing Lid, and change what? What is the easiest swap that will fit with no problems that will increase airflow?

Thanks

The best setup no doubt would be to step up to the FAST intake, matching throttle body, and larger MAF. Obviously this isn't what most would call cheap, but it would no doubt yield you the best results.

Spend the cash on the fast/tb combo...I wouldn't worry about the maf as it sometimes causes tuning issues

No sense in getting larger components on either side of the maf and using a stock maf. Upgrade that as well and find a tuner that knows what he is doing if yours has problems with it.

A 92/92 or 102/102 combo would work great. Either with an 85mm or 100 maf and similar sized lid.

Oh, and sell the blackwing on ebay. I bet you get close to 500 bucks for it.

If you get one of the bigger lids I could see getting the bigger maf so you don't have big lid>smaller Od maf>fast 92/102 tb, but I wouldn't think there are much gains for a bigger lid and maf bc they would only be a restriction at wot which is not very often unless you are either racing it or beating its *** constantly

Stop digging a hole. Do you think this guy got heads and a cam to idle around the Walmart parking lot? Sure the stock maf and lid will work but then again so will the ls6 intake. Obviously he wants to improve flow, so why restrict it even more with the factory stuff in front of It?

I gained absolutely nothing from the 85mm MAF even with a better Saxon screen. The gains from the Fast intake come more from the overall design than the TB size.

It depends on the OPs power level if the MAF will help or not. Unless he is over 450rwhp, I wouldn't worry about it yet.

So what are we talking if I am all in? And who has all the parts that are sponsors here?
Fast Toys 98mm Lid $200
85mm GM ZO6 MAF $100
Fast 92 Intake/92 TB $1000

About $1300ish ? Any other connectors or adapters needed to swap it all?
Would 25 rwhp be a reasonable gain?
I can get a new Dyno and see what happens over the current 401rwhp

You will also need to retune for the MAF and buy an adapter since the 85mm MAF combines the IAT and MAF sensors. The adapter is ~$30.

You also might need to purchase a bellow to fit the larger lid, maf, and TB.

25rwhp is probably optimistic. I would expect ~15-18rwhp or so, pretty much all of it being from the intake alone.

Dump the maf, why bother.
Save the cash and get a decent tune in there.

Depending on your heads and cam, I'd say 25 is conservative. If you look around in the dyno section, people are picking up almost 40 with decently large setups.

He said it is a 400rwhp car so I wouldn't count on it.

If he was in the high 400rwhp range, it would be more likely to see high gains from the better intake, MAF, lid.

I would save the money on a good dyno tune. Unless you're trying to squeeze every single hp out of your set up, the 1300+ doesn't justify 15-20hp IMO

Did Firehawks and SS's from SLP come with a 85mm MAF already? I see an SLP MAF for sale on Fasttoys website for $170. Want to make sure I don't buy it if I already have one.

The SLP is a GM Maf with a resistor installed so it supposedly doesn't need a tune...from the reading I've done here especially in the tuning section they are more trouble than good and often cars run better without them.

You can get a used 85mm GM MAF for around $50 shipped if you look in the classifieds here or get one from a salvage GM truck. The 4.8/5.3/6.0 trucks had the 85mm since 1999.

So here is a list of everything I would need to go all out on getting all the air in on a 2002 Firehawk

Fast LSx 92mm Intake Manifold - BLACK!
$849.99
92mm Cable Drive Throttle Body
$349.99
SLP Smooth Bellow for 1998-2002 F-body
$69.95
Fast Toys Black 98mm LS1 High Flow Air Lid
$169.00
SLP Mass Air Flow Sensor-1998-2000 LS1 F-body or Corvette
$199.95

Sub Total: $1,638.88
+ tune and labor = $2200 quick

All for 20 to 30 rwhp? Aaron was right!

So what is the better alternative.....supercharger?
Anyone have a slightly used, but complete Procharger kit for sale?
Better bang for the buck?
Or what would do the most from the list above over the stock Blackwing and LS6....the fast 92/92 throttle body?

Thanks for all the advice guys.

No, they had the same maf every other ls1 f body had. You can get a used truck maf for much cheaper as they are the same as the slp maf. The slp maf has a resistor wired in that screws with ait's. Pass on that.

You would be better served to get a cam kit instead of a FAST. You will see gains from a FAST just doing bolt ons but you will see BETTER gains from say... LS6 intake and a cam.

A cam kit and a FAST 92 are about the same price.
