Default Heads/CAM HELP !!!

I would have asked in other related threads but didnt want to hi-jack someones thread lol.

I'm looking at getting a heads/cam package. my mod list is this (1999 Camaro SS M6)

Corsa Cat-back
Hooker long tubes
LCA's with reloc. brackets
Bilstein Shocks
Short shifter
Built 10 bolt with moser axels and moser 373's
LID
315 Nitto DR's

I'm a college guy and I drive my care daily, so i need it to stay street friendly however I want to make as much power as I can while still being able to have it as a DD. I have never dyno'ed my car so the power it makes right now I have no clue on. Can you guys shoot me some numbers on what you think my car puts down now? and how much i would be looking at with your suggested heads/cam setup? Also can a $3,000 budget get it done?

My best time at the 1/8 track is a 8.8 @84 with a 2.1 60ft that was without the relocation brackets, headers and bilsteins on.

Bolt on ls1's with a 6 speed trans usually make in the area of 335- 350 rwhp. Torque is close to hp . A good mild setup for daily driving and budget friendly ish would be some prc 2.5 heads perferably 5.3 's imo. And the 224 cam or 228 from texas speed. With a stock intake it should be good for 420 rwhp average. Study the dyno section and search different heads cam packages.

$3000-3500...possibly a little more depending on how much labor is in your area.

600 for cam package from Texas speed includes spring pushrods and cam. Get some heads for 1500 and find a local guy to install for you. Preferably a member from the forum who knows what they are doing.

Don't forget about the oil pump, trunion upgrade, lifters, trays, timing chain, and gaskets which will run you about another $650. If you're on a strict budget, pick up a stock set of 243's on here for $400 and get them freshened up at you local machine shop, all for under a grand. Do it right and go with dual springs from TSP, the kit is $740 which isn't bad. This will put you right at $2100 for parts, not including installation or tune. Like I said, $3500 is a little closer to reality for a decent H/C setup after it's all said and done if you have to pay for labor.

sounds reasonable. For that price is it possible to just pick up a used d1sc kit and throw it on and gain the same amount of HP ?

Might change the coolant when you drain it for H & C and flush the radiator if that hasn't been done in a while. It's easy to do a little preventive maintaince while doing H&C. Don't be surprised if a radiator hose or two needs replacing etc. Mine is also a 99 about due for new radiator hoses. I would allow some extra money for things that come up unexpected at least a buffer of $1000.

Does your clutch hold well? Sometimes with a big power upgrade a new clutch isn't too far away. I was lucky my stock clutch held up fine after H&C and is still in the car and doesn't slip.

If your doing a 224 or 228 @.050 cam, I suggest allowing some extra money for tuning. This will make for a much better daily driver experience.

Likewise, if you don't have an LS6 intake, I'd get one for the H&C swap so you can get the most out of the mod's your making.

My H & C set up while very old over ten years so I'm not up on the current prices for H & C. I have a 224 XE-R cam. Typically my springs have needed replacement at about 30,000 miles but I'm pretty easy on the car. If I beat on the car a lot, I would be looking at the springs after 20,000 miles.

TSP 228R is a great cam. 50hp gains with no low end loss and its pretty streetable for mostly everyone.

I have a new radiator and ALL new hoses less than 10K miles so im good there. My clutch and intake I have plans for already replacing them before the heads cam swap. Only thing I think I'll have to be careful with is my rearend. I have a 10 bolt as beefed up as it can get, but lets face it, it's still just a 10-bolt lol

im gonna do the same thing but im going a little more radical. im gonna do the EPS 236/248 cam with .617/.617 lift with PRC 225cc heads and a FAST 92/92 setup with upgraded injectors and the full bolt ons. Im looking to make 450whp+ and still have it be a DD. And im also hoping (and this is really hopeful with a good tune and a light foot) to get 18-25 mpg. i know this really doesnt pertain to you but i figured id through my 2 cents in.

Hopefully you have a good rear-end, cause with that setup your gonna need one. If you drive it softly no you wont, but as soon as you get that thing on a track and if you get it to hook said goodbye to that 10 bolt. lol not to mention your clutch will need upgrading, if you havn't done that already...
