how can i tell what year my lq4 block is i. order to order main and head studs

check the flexplate to see if it has a spacer on it.

That narrows it down to 99-early 00.

On the passengers side where the bell bolts up, you will see laser etched numbers, that is the last 8 or so of the Vin of the vehicle it came out of. That will tell you the exact year.

so how do i figure out year with last 8 of vin. i just have the bare block

That number is etched into the block. Find that and it will be there. There are 17 digits in the vin. The 10th will be the year. Just go backwards until you get to what would be the 10th if the full vin was present.

Also, if you only have the bare block, the only thing that really matters that is year specific is head bolt length and cam bore sizes. It's pretty easy to check for head bolt length, and the cam bores had like 4 different revisions that even knowing the exact year is still only a crap shoot.

So in reality, it's not really imperative to know the exact year.

i found main studs and they say to fit up to 04. is there different main studs or they all the same
