Default Cam Recommendations to Wake Up an LQ4

Just bought an LQ4 takeout with a 4L80e trans that will be going in my '69 Camaro. Everything I've read shows these to be somewhere between 300-345hp stock (is that at the flexplate or at the rear wheels, btw?). I'll be installing an LS1 intake and long-tube headers, and will be changing the oil pump and timing chain before I install it, so I figured I'd swap the cam while I'm at it.

Any recommendations on cams to get me into the 350-400hp range at the rear wheels? Also, if you have a recommendation, please let me know if you think it'd require spring replacement as well.

Thanks!

Bob

Depending on the year, LQ4 is in the 300 hp range at the flywheel. What other mods do you have planned? Stall? Also, what driving characteristics are you looking to achieve such as lopey idle, low end torque, high rpm hp? You will likely need larger injectors as well and tuning capabilities or access to a tuner. Springs are a must.

It'll be a daily driver, with an occasional autocross- no dragstrip time- so high rpm hp isn't as important as low-mid range torque. Not looking for anything really lopey, just trying to get it better than stock and take advantage of the headers and better flowing (than stock truck) intake. I've got to have the ECM reprogrammed anyway, so I can have them accomodate for the cam swap when that's done.

Where exactly are you getting the idea the LS1 intake is better than the truck intake?

http://www.hotrod.com/techarticles/e...k/tune_up.html

Some research on my part over the last day or so seems to suggest the only intake worse than the regular LS1 intake is the FWD Impala SS intake. Now if you have a later LS1 intake that is the same as the LS6 then those are a minor upgrade over the truck intake and the gains are at high rpms where you say you are not concerned with.

The truck intake is ugly and tall so it is rarely used on vehicles other than trucks but don't let that be twisted into some myth about it being bad.

I would also suggest you strongly consider a 4L60E, the 4L80E is unnecessarily heavy, large, parasitic for such a mild setup as you are proposing.

I think the TSP 224/224 cam would be a good fit for you. Buy it as a cam kit with single springs and pushrods and call it a day.

The Crane 1449565 (216/224 115lsa, lift .551/.551") is a nice step up from a stock or LS6 cam, but it still has very little overlap (-10*) and will have a smooth idle and good valve spring life, I'd also recommend something like a set of PAC-1218 valve springs.
BTW, You might be fine with the stock stall, but a small 2800-3k stall would be better.

I wouldn't go any smaller on the cam than a TSP 228R, especially in a 6.0 liter personally.

Like stated the truck intake will be fine unless you just don't want the ugly part. If not find a LS6 manifold to get the looks you may want back. Cam wise I would go with something in the mid 220s duration like a 224 or 228r on a 112lsa that'll bring power on a little sooner and give you a little more chop. You'll 100 percent need springs and Since you want low and mid range torque your gonna want to bump compression some. I think the LQ4 is only around 9.5. I'm not sure how much can be milled but I would definately look into doing it and you could do some home porting on them just to clean them up.

227/235 110+3 and FAST LSXRT 102. Huge torque!

a Texas Speed (TSP) 228r cam with a truck intake would be a good combo.

My bad, I overlooked the 350-400 RWHP(thought FWHP) .
I'd look at a 224/224 112lsa or a EPS 222/226 113lsa cam, and a 3k-3200 stall. Id also consider milling an porting the heads for better flow an compression.

True true true , too many put the mouth on the old truck intake. The 4L80 does not have the best 1st gear in stock form either.

How rowdy do you want it to be? Making torque on a stock engine requires a lower IVC, which usually means a tighter LSA/ICL or very short duration.

There is a lot of room to lower LSA from stock before things get into compromised manners, that and short duration can generally handle a tighter LSA before manners are compromised.

I agree. A 223/231 111+2 wouldn't have a ton of overlap, but would make a ton of torque.

Why the big split, if he is running cathedral port ?

That's not a big split. Stock I/E ratio is pretty weak. The added exhaust duration helps that. With the earlier IVC, you need more exhaust to carry the power past peak so it doesn't fall flat on its face.

So you really like that 8* split . What about lift favor the exhaust , how much ?

Depends on the lobes chosen. I'd probably do an LXL exhaust lobe. 230 .609" lift with an LSL on the intake. LSL is 223 .610" lobe.

So straight on the lift. So whats thinking on same goals monster torque across the whole curve for LS3 heads ?
