Default Ported head opinions UPDATE

ran across a set of heads that were hand ported by Katech about 6 years ago. 853 castings. new 2.02/1.58 valves. blue stripe springs. Can getthem for what seems like a decent price. Are they worth the trouble? In other words, any idea if they will give me a decent performance improvement? heads haven't been run since work was done and look very nice. Only running a 224r cam. what do you think a fair price would be? Also heads have been cut and chamber is 64.5 cc's.

Personally unless they are a super good deal I would wait and get some 243s and then maybe port them if you have some money left over.

I would get new springs if you buy those heads.

You can find the ls6 243's for under 500$ as well. I'd wait.

If they were ported by Katech, I would personally jump on them for that price especially if they have never been run. Katech built the C5R and C6R racing Corvettes and know what they are doing.

Get them. They're easily worth the $500.

The only thing you should try to confirm is the runner volume. You would think that with the 2.02 intake they are not super over sized but you never know. May not be what you want if this is for a driver of any type. You could measure them yourself if the owner isn't opposed.

Well, I picked them up today. Got them for $440. Got home and found that the retainers aren't magnetic, thinking titanium. The springs are natural colored with a blue stripe on them. Thought they were LS3 springs, but they don't look like LS3 springs up close. Maybe they're better than I anticipated.

Get the serial numbers off the ends of the heads and have me check them. You can email them to me. jason@katechengines.com. We were not hand porting 6 years ago so something doesn't sound right. At that time they would have been CNC-ported.

I had AI port my 853's and put the numbers in the sig. It put 405 rwhp with the stock unported 853's and a streetsweeper cam which is alot larger than the cam i have now.

Will post pics, but these were definitely professionally done. Castings are new and have a number stamped on end.

http://detroit.craigslist.org/mcb/pts/3477169642.html from the craigslist ad
these pics are better than the ones I took. Jason from katech said they didn't do them. the springs are 918 comp springs and their ti retainers. those alone cost $500. so good deal no matter who ported them.

Those heads look pretty nice....Since you got them for so cheap I'd have a
local shop flow test them so you know about how well they'll work and can
match a cam for them
