Default Oil usage

The POS 2001 Camaro I just bought is using about 1 qt every 1000 mile driving normal. USES A INSANE AMOUNT if you go WOT, just dumps it out the exhaust. I used almost a 1/2 qt in 50 miles hard driving. How the hell can this be? Does GM just build crap anymore?

Its a two owner car that was well taken care of with 87k miles in it. I guess I'm going to trade it and hope the next one is better. Actually i'm thinking about staying away from any GM products, just too many BS issues with their engines and rears. I've owned 4 ls1 cars and EVERYONE had the same problems....noisy oil burning engines AND pinion seal leaking-noisy rears.

The GM dealers don't stand behind anything and everytime i've dealt with any GM dealer trying to get something fixed it was a complete disaster.

ANYWAY how much oil does your LS1 use @90k miles?

Have you checked to see if your PCV system is working correctly and doesn't have any cracks in it?

these engines do tend to burn some oil, even the new built blocks do. like the strokers and whatnot, but if your burning a 1/2qt at 50miles then theres something wrong

If I run WOT it burns it! Driving normal 1qt in 1000 miles or so....bazaar if you ask me. How could it just dump oil out that bad @wot without fouling plugs etc? I don't see any smoke behind me but i'm gfuessing the cats are burning it up so fine you don;t see it.

My car uses virtually no oil now and it used very little before I did the build on the motor. I agree with LilJayV10 check your pcv system.

no way cats are burning that much oil up and are not stuffed up by now and not seeing anything out the back, thats alot of oil

you sure your not leaking it?? check your rear main seal, a friend of mine had a bad rear main seal and he didnt notice it leaking until it was to late and motor took a **** from no oil

Nope dry as a bone and I just tested the cats today, they are wide open no blockage at all. PCV system is good, no cracks etc. I went through the same thing before with my 99TA, number 7 cylinder was using oil and eventually the piston failed.

The TA was using 1 qt every 500 miles with 28k on it! Geez I hope this doesn't turn into the same mess.

This is a common issue with ls1s. Mine was sucking the oil through the intake so I installed a catch can and instantly noticed a difference in performance. I honestly dont mind my engines burning a little oil but 1/2qt in 500 miles is alot. Good luck

that seems a bit excessive on oil consumption. i would definitely look at the PCV system or pull the valve covers. I dealt with a buddies car recently and it did the same thing. Eventually the motor decided to go on vacation. Pulled the valve covers off and it was pure sludge. It was a recent purchase so apparently the old owner didnt take the best care of it.

GM if you ever read this thread...you are a bunch of dumb azzes. I do beileve its time for a nice Mustang GT.

When i first got my car in 08 at 72k miles, the previous owner had always used mobil 1 5w-30 synthetic (since 20k miles when he got it). So i figured i would do the same. Started noticing it would burn through 1 qt of mobil 1 every 1000 miles. Car was basically stock at the time, just k&n intake and slp loudmouth. After reading good things about German Castrol synthetic 0w-30, i switched to that. It maybe burns half a quart between oil changes now. The little bit of piston slap it had also went away.

When i worked at a cadillac dealer, all the newer v6 cars called for mobil 1. All of those cars burned through at least 1 qt every 1000. The Enterprise rental car company refused to shell out the change for mobil 1 on their cadillacs that they rented to the service customers. They just had us put regular 5w-30 in. They had ZERO oil consumption issues with their cars.

Im not knocking mobil 1 in particular. just trying to point out that sometimes its as simple as changing the brand of oil.

Just my experience. Take it for what its worth.

From what I am reading here there is damage to something related to the motor, be it internal or PVC and also to the area between the owner's ears. It is an 11-12yo car and he thinks burning oil means GM makes junk. No car manufacturer hits a home run every time, they all have hassles but bitching about a manufacturer's quality on a mover decade old performance car that sounds as it is has DAMAGE just makes you sound stupid.

Half a quart in 50 miles is not something for a catch can or oil brand, there is a mechanical defect somewhere.

The M1 things was ALL marketing it has never been all that great for GM V8s not even the LT1s it debuted in as a GM recommended oil.

I missed that part about half a quart every 50 miles. Your right, something is fucked up. And yes, knowing what i know now, Mobil 1 is nothing special.

On another note, your 11 second Caprice is awesome.

That is all.

I sold the 5.0 stroked to 331 out of my `94 sn95 just so I could use an LSX based motor. The 5.0 might be easier and cheaper but it doesn't make as much power when equally prepared and that is a fact Jack.

Its sucked 1/2 qt in 50 miles driving WOT off and on.....why would I make that up???? WTH? A car in this good of condition that was well cared for by 2 owners shouldn't sound like diesel engine when its completely warmed up. Its poor quality control on Gms part, If you heard how bad it slaps you'd ****. I kid you not it sounds EXACTLY my nieghbors diesel truck even at full operating temp. The inside of the engine is clean as new and so is the coolant. It was well taken care of.

GM used cheap pistons along with poor assembly sizing to turn what could have been a legendary engine into SMOKING, CLINKING, CLATTERING pile of monkey spunk!

Sad part of this is a properly assembled LS1 engine will run hard a very long time.....but you gotta find a properly assembled engine 1st!

Default Gm

Just buy the ford and get the **** of this form. If you wher half a car guy you would fine out what the issue is and fix it instead of bashing GM.
Get you man pants on and grab the craftmans wrench and find the problem.
