Default Motor not starting after ice storm, Starter? HELP!

we had a bit of an ice storm a couple days ago. I started the car yesterday and let it run for about 20 mins and it started and ran fine. I went to start it this morning to head in to work and the engine wont turn at all, not even a click. The gauge cluster lights up and all the inside lights work. The battery was a little low so I had a neighbor give me a jump but it stll wont turn over at all. I'm not hearing any ignition sounds at all. Is this the starter?

Thx in advance.

Maybe the starter solenoid is frozen. Or maybe it needs a starter and the cold weather just finished it off. Can you hear the starter solenoid engage?

I just called the parts guys at my local Chevrolet dealership, they are tellin me around 420$ for a starter which seems rediculous. Autozone has a remanufactured one for 169 (+ core for 40$ more) Do i need the extra core? Whats it for? Is there any reason not to get the one from auto zone?

Is your security light flashing when it won't start? It may be a VATS issue.

Also, if it is the starter, I wouldn't go the dealer route but I also wouldn't go the reman/rebuilt route either.

Get one from the auto parts store that is "new." I got my last one from Advance Auto with their coupon code (google them, they are great).

They want your old starter so they can turn it into a remanufactured part. I haven't bought parts from AutoZone so I don't know the quality but I believe you get what you pay for. Having it tested ain't a bad idea though

its not the security light. That isn't flashing and goes away after the key is "on" for a few seconds. I also tried my other set of keys just incase it was that. I called a local mechanic who says he can find a starter for cheaper and doesn't like auto zone so I'll probably just end up getting it to him. Will it hurt to push start the car to get it there? the shop is only 5 mins from my house. I could have it towed but probably 75 bucks wasted that way.

My old camaro V6 back in the day did this when it got really cold outside. Would just randomly not start or click or do anything. I would wait 30 mins or so and then car would crank right up like nothing happened.

Good luck let us know what it ended up being!!

Autozone starter would be fine, the core charge is so they can fix the old one, with new internals and sell it.

No harm in a push start. And once its running..make sure to get the motor pretty hot before shutting it off,it may restart afterwards once or twice.Sometimes if you cycle the key pretty fast the starter solenoid might engage aswell.

If you go with the Autozone starter, the core charge works like this: You will pay that additional $40 up front and get it back when you give them your old starter. Like others have said, they will then send it in to rebuild and resell as a remanufactured starter (which as far as I care, is new). They usually replace all of the parts that might wear out with new, reusing the shell and other non-critical parts.

Basically you will pay an extra $40, or give them your old one.

Jack up the car and cross the starter positive post. This may be a frozen starter. Maybe rap on it with a dead blow hammer at the same time. Could be a starter solenoid. The AutoZone starters come with a lifetime warranty. Good to have if u keep the receipt.

DJinn, this is the genIII internal engine section. Pistons, cranks, etc.

You'll get more and better responses if you put this in the Firebird section.

Let us know how that new starter is!
