timing chain question?
Im building my first motor and i have a couple questions to double check myself. I have the block together and the timing chain. The timing chain seems to have more play than it should, but like I said its my first motor build so im not to sure. I would say you can wiggle it 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch on both sides. Also on my oil pump it came with a spring that raise the oil pressure 5 psi. Should I swap the springs out?
Thanks
Thanks

Some engines (such as mine), came unequipped with a chain dampener.
Those without the dampener, usually had the two unused bolt holes, as seen here. I eventually added the device.
Those WITH a dampener, are better able to control the slack/slap.
There are a couple of different designs...
One is for the LS2 engine,
and its' bolt holes are a bit closer than the LS1 design.
There is also a version which comes with an adjustment.

I wouldn't worry about if for stock applications.....but for higher hp builds, you can:
1. Try to find a no longer made ls6 dampner
2. Use an ls2 dampner and chain and modify it (my choice)
3. Use the dampner adaptor plate from trickflow or drill your own bolt holes for the dampner if you got an older than 2001 ls1

I only posted it to give you an idea of what is optional.
Here is a link with a good explanation about the orange pieces, & the parameters for the LS1/LS6 dampeners, as well as the LS2/3 type....

The first pic in Post #4 (without dampener), is my engine.

For the LS1, I bought an altered (LS2) piece from someone, here.
The holes were redrilled, and the ferrules were repositioned to accomodate the LS1. The price was a bit cheaper than the alternatives.
I recall that back then, TSP, or another vendor, had a few of the LS1 type dampeners available, but the price was high.
Here's the former link for this piece....please read carefully!

Found the original thread with the altered LS2 dampener.
Post #23 is the manufacturer of this piece. If you're interested, he may just have one left over.
