Default Do you guys think 20w50 is to thick to run in the winter?

Iv been running VR1 20w50 for quite sometime now and now that its winter I'm not sure if you guys think the cold would make it to thick to run? My engine seems fun and feels allot better over 5-30. Let me know your opinions. 20w50 is what my short block builder recomended but it was summer when I asked him.

I asked my builder this a week ago.. He recommended the same oil and same weight.

I will be starting it next weekend with that oil in it. It is all I will ever run on it.

If the builder recommends that oil. He probably sets his clearances up for it. I'd run what he recommends. At this point. Your shortblock builder is the one who knows how he set it up. Ask him the question again. See what he says.

I always let it get to at least 150 before I drive it. AES built it so il stick with 20w50 then. I had the oil sitting in my car outside and when I went to dump it in it was as thick as gear oil basicly lol.

What do you call cold?
Much of the country calls 30degrees cold, I think he high here was 4 above zero yesterday and areas not far from me had lows in the double digits below zero.

I might try 20w50 at 30degrees if that was what the builder said to use in summer but if it were down around 0F I would maybe try a 5w-40 which should be easy to find or even a 15w-40 which would be really easy to find as it is common in diesel engines and usually API rated for gas engines too.

When I worked at AES I would recommend Rotella T6 5W-40 or Castrol Syntec 5W-50 if you planned to drive below 32*F. I had a problem when it was very cold, close to zero, APS scavenge pump couldn't move the 20W-50, blew out into the turbos.

put a hot plate 1/2 " below the oil pan and heat up the oil for 30 min before start up.
