Default Is my ladies Z28 toast?

She bought it a few months ago it runs fine she bought it with the gauge like this is it a bad gauge or motor? I found one piece of metal on the oil drain plug looked like a finger nail but obviously metal.

I would start with replacing the oil pressure sending unit. Simple fix, not expensive, and it’s not uncommon for them to go bad.

Do you happen to have any pics of the piece of metal you found?

You can try a new sending unit, but when the gauge starts bouncing in drive the oil pump is struggling to keep it steady at that rpm level. I'd say it needs a new oil pump and you shouldn't drive it otherwise the motor will be toast.

I don't I was pissed when I saw it I just threw it. It was probably about 1/2 inch long thin like a lead pencil and curled like a half moon.

I'm just speculating but the broken piece could be part of the oil pump casting where the pickup tube is inserted and now it's sucking air. Replace the sending unit and if the gauge is still bouncing check out the oil pump.

You do not need to drop the pan, you just need to lower it. Remove your timing cover, the pump is on the crank snout on the front of the engine. Gently raise your jack up to the oil pan, remove all the bolts, then slowly lower it. Just be careful removing the pickup tube bolt, if you drop it then you will need to drop the pan completely. Also be careful tightening the oil pan bolts, anything past snug and you will strip them in an instant.

Lowering the pan is dropping it, same thing. Taking it off is removing it.
