Default Dowel pin missing.....

Anyone know if the A4 equipped cars came with a dowel pin in the crankshaft flange to help index the flexplate, or do you simply "eyeball" the flexplate and torque it down? Thanks.

I don't recall my flexplate having a dowel (but it might have).

But I certainly don't recall it having any play in it to move other than spinning around so the holes would line up.

I think you're correct. I tried an 11mm dowel and it fits snug in the crank and is looser in the flexplate. I think if I just index the dowel holes so they line up, I'd be good to go. Thanks for your .02

Thanks for your reply. Damn-The motor's been apart so long I can't remember if it ever had a dowel! Anyway, as Thunderstruck says, there's no play in the fit between the crank flange O.D. and the flexplate I.D.. But my Factory Service Manual specifically says there's no dowel for the m6 motors, but is not clear on the A4's-Thus my question. Wonder why there's a hole in both, then, unless they're there for assembly line convenience. Or maybe the bean counters over-ruled their being installed so they saved 15 cents on each motor?!!!

Mine are both a4 motors. Idk lol I didn't notice one in the flex plate or the crank when I took it off. I'd assume the 6 bolts that go in it are enough to hold it in place lol
