Default LS1 cam gear wearing on thrust plate bolts

I had a shop swap my cam for me and after 1000 miles I started getting a cam position sensor code. After tearing it down I noticed the bolts for the thrust plate wore down and grinding on the back of the cam gear. The cam was over an eighth of an inch slid back from the thrust plate. Where is the play coming from and how do I fix it? Wrong cam gear, thrust plate or cam? Comp cams xer281hr in an 02 LS1.

You can use the newer design that uses countersunk bolts. Are you using a double roller chain?

We have seen this happen on two different vehicles throughout the years. Seemed to be a camshaft issue. Both were resolved by changing out the camshaft. Not sure exactly what was machined incorrectly, but it didn't seem to be a cam bearing/block issue.

My cam was slid back in the motor and when I moved it back forward to where it is supposed to be everything lines up right and measures out the same as my original cam. The only piece I'm lacking from my original setup is the timing chain and gears. This leads me to think I have the wrong cam gear or need a thicker thrust plate. When I pulled it apart the cam was back at least 1/8th of an inch

got any pics? If this is indeed the result of shoddy cam machining, then any engine builder worth his salt should have caught the problem before running the engine.

If the timing gear is removed, the cam will slide back about 1/8". This is normal as it is not a tight fit against the rear. The cam, once locked in place, will be a close fit with the cam plate.

This sounds to me, from your description, that the bolt heads are either too large or there is an issue with the cam timing sprocket.
