Default HEELLLPPP!!!!! oil pump replacement

getting ready to tackle my oil pump. car has 140k on it and the gauge bounces on idle alittle above 20 psi and never gets higher the 50 psi. so as a precaution im going to do my oil pump. plus install a autometer oil press. gauge. few questions for you guys. will the fatter autometer sending unit fit behind the intake or do i need and 2" extension to get it up and away from the intake. second question is there a special tool designed to take off are harmonic balancers or can a regular style one work?

3 jaw puller, biggest one you can rent should do the job on stock balancer...I have no idea on that sender.

There's a 3 jaw puller specifically designed for ls engines. Go with that. I got one from harbor freight and it sucked. My personal recommendation on an oil pump would be either the synergy or high flow melling oil pump. Don't go with the ported version. Imo a waste of money.

you can rent the 3 jaw puller from a local auto parts store. be sure to put the jaws on the inside of the balancer, turn it and lock it on the grove thing. you will see what im talking bout when u look at it. you will need to get a longer crank bolt to put the balancer on.
read this how too. it really helped me out. and be careful with the oil pimp tube pickup bolt.

The back side of the pulley has notches that the jaws of the puller go into. I used a cheap puller from the local tool store, and had no problems taking it off.

Not much room for a 'fatter' sender. Check this link - the 6th picture down shows the LS1 sender area with manifold. Don't forget - you need a pulley install tool like this (shameless plug): install tool

Don't waste your time with the gauge. Stocker is fine for what you're doing.

The auto-meter sender will need the adapter to fit in the engine, plus you will need an NPT extension with an angle. I have one on my LS.

50 PSI sound normal to me. Mine will idle about 40 hot, go to about 50-60 driving around about 2K RPMS.

I wouldn't worry with the autometer gauge. You might need a new LS1 oil sender. It's like $50.

I'd get a Melling HV or the Synergy. I did Synergy because it clears double rollers.

Hey man sound like your sender is the problem with the bouncy gauge not the pump..although the pump definitely won't hurt it with that kinda mileage.....
My gauge has the same issue

I have done a hand full of oil pumps in trucks with out touching the pan....
Just removing the front cover ....it does kinda suck but I can do the job faster than pulling the pan.........
All though I have not tried it in a car before.....

trucks are easier because the pickup tube bolts to the higher hole on the pump. on the cars, the pickup tube is on the lower hole and you have to lower the pan to get to it. only need to unbolt the front ones, and loosen the back ones. the bolts by the motor mounts suck to get to.

LS7 Crank bolt works for install. It's longer than the LS1 bolt and has a nice big washer on it. That's what I've used everytime

I have or should say had that tool. I could not find it this last time around, guess it got lost in the move to Houston... Worked like a champ though, will have to order another soon...

No because it is riveted to the pan.

The rivets are actually pretty simple to get off on the oil pan though.. Iirc it is only two if memory serves me correctly. Care to verify Steve?
