Default How much oil pressure is too much?

I have an lq4 100% stock bottom end. I installed a set of 243 heads, timing chain, and a ls6 oil pump with the red spring in it. I have around 70 psi oil pressure at idle, and goes to 100 psi and pegs the gauge when driving. It has mobil 1 5w30 oil. I was thinking about changing to the standard pressure spring to lower the oil pressure. I runs great, just worried if this too much oil pressure.

I have the green spring installed in mine. Runs at 40psi hot idle, about 50-60 on throttle.

I think you don't need that much pressure....

Yes, that is an *insane* amount of oil pressure.

Swap out springs, that is to much oil pressure.

I'd say thats very good oil pressure, less chance of metal to metal contact .. might rob ya a few hp not too much 5-10, 15 tops though i'd think. I have the red spring and read its spos to be like a 70psi or so, mine hits 80-100 at high rpms... And i hit 6700rpm daily peace

You seriously need to stop giving advice when you have no idea what you are talking about whatsoever.

I think swapping out springs is the way to go. Just had to fix the trans(too much power lol)! So I just need a little break from working on it.

Default Is 6,000psi too much ?

The lubricant, by virtue of its viscosity, clings to the surface of the rotating journal, and is drawn into the wedge, creating a very high pressure (sometimes in excess of 6,000 psi), which acts to separate the journal from the bearing to support the applied load. http://www.epi-eng.com/piston_engine...e_bearings.htm Is 6,000 psi too much, will 6,000 psi cause bearing erosion, i'd say no, but aeration and cavitation will.

btw found the thread here with pic of 120psi bearings included http://speedtalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=34681 Peace

how hot is the oil.

Mine makes a bunch of oil pressure when cold but 80-90 at 7500 with 200 degrees of oil temp. To get more GPM thru these engines the oil pressure will go up.

Not always a bad thing if the engine needs the extra oil.

404, that thread you linked to is talking about a *race* application. Drag racing, to be exact. Not a lot of runtime. Not a street driver. It's also one guys opinion.

That excessive pressure in a daily driver/street car is do a few things. First, you'll have a *lot* more oil windage due to the simple fact that you are pushing more oil out of the bearings and into the spinning rotating assembly. This, in turn, could produce more oil consumption due to excessive oil splashing on the cylinder walls, more than the oil rings can deal with. You are also risking grenading the internals of the oil pump, or pushing out pressed in oil galley plugs. There is the HP loss from the pump resistance, the greater shearing of the oil leading to faster breakdown, excessive oil heating from overpumping, etc.

There are a *lot* of proven reasons to *not* run oil pressure that high.

404, your whole 9 posts read like a list of crap regurgitated from other questionable sources. Stop propagating wrong information.

That being said, there are a good number of bone stock LS motors making a *lot* of power on the stock oil pressure.

Yup I think its too much oil pressure. I ran a stock lq4 pump to 7000k, and maybe 50 passes. So I know stock oil pressure is gonna be fine. Just never had anything with this much pressure. I am going to change the spring this weekend. I will repost exact oil pressure before and after.

Is that cold pressure? Just for reference the dry sump system in my vette will surpass 80 psi when cold (closer to 90 psi on the DIC) in regular driving, it idles around 70 psi. At full operating temp the oil pressure is just above 40 psi at idle, Mobile 5w-30 here too. If those are hot pressures I think it's too much.

OK, so oil pressure was 80 at idle cold. Dropped to around 70 at 200. Changed the spring yesterday, and it has around 55-60 cold at idle. We have some crappy weather here for the next few days so I have not yet driven it to get it to warmed up.

So with the white spring. oil pressure is at 50 psi at idle, and goes to about 75 psi at 2500 rpms then to about 85 when I am on it hard! This is at 200*.

Mine is 60 at idle and over 100 at about 5k. I dont like it that high at all, but I am too lazy to pull the frt back off and work on it.
