Default How much is too much with oil weight?

My car is stock internal with 140k miles on it. I am wanting to run the standard non-synthetic VR1 oil but locally all I can find is the SAE50 and 20w-50. I am worried thats too thick for my oil pump. Will that cause issues?

I want to run something thicker to help with a small leak from the backside of the engine someplace until I can pull it and rebuild it. I just don't want to cause damage using too thick of an oil.

Missouri. It gets pretty warm out in the summer time. Today is mid 90s and we are just getting started.

"Thicker oil" is not going to cure/stop a leak....

The oil at the crank and cam bearings is basically hydroplaning things to keep them apart so FLOW VOLUME is important. You go real thick ans you will put the pump into pressure bypass sooner and reduce volume across the bearings. Might not hurt anything but doesn't really sound like such a good idea once you understand things a little does it?

as stated it will not stop the leak. may slow it down some tho

i had a rear main seal leak once on a diff fbody. i switched to 20-50 to slowed it down. went from a one quart of oil a month to one every 3 month (give or take) and i live in FL.

i also use to run 20-50 in one of my stangs for years, never had a problem.

I'd run 10-30 m1 or Castrol, or 0-40 m1. And just take care of the leak ASAP.

I am not hoping it will stop it completely but slow it down some. It is not a big leak but it is there and I don't like it. Unfortunately the VR1 is only available locally in those two weights so I think I will have to run something different.

i think the VR1 is a bit too thick... 10w30 10w40 tops.

a 10W30 can easily be thinner than a 5w-30, both just fall into the same hot viscosity RANGE.

The 5w-30 spec is about CAFE numbers where a slightly thinner oil at startup might help numbers .01 and at the OEM level that is worth it.
