Default Another oiling issue thread

I have a fresh rebuilt LS1, all new bearings, gaskets, pumps and new oil pick up tube. the motor is currently on a test stand until we can figure out what is going on. the issue im having is no oil making its way up to the rockers but if the oil pressure sending unit is taken out and the engine is cranked over oil starts to rise. we have not yet hooked up a mech. oil pressure gauge to it to confirm what oil psi it has. the oil used is the O'riley brand conventional oil. I have heard the O ring on the pick up tube cracking or ripping and causing bad oil pressure or oil pumps sticking. quick run down on the valve train tick performance cam shaft package and new LS7 lifters. the person who built the engine works for a local machine shop and has been building motors for the past 10yrs. any help from you guys would be greatly appreciated.

Matt

If the oil pickup o ring isn't perfect it will draw air and severely lower oil pressure or kill it totally. Another very overlooked thing is the oil barbell. Many times when blocks are machined, jet washed etc, the barbell is taken out. I have seen several new engines that had no oil pressure from missing the barbell.

I'm new to the LS series engine as I'm doing a swap. What is the oil barbell, what does it look like (or is it self explanatory) and where can it be located, if lost or damaged can it replaced?

Yea double check oil pickup oring and if you still have problems check the oil pump...this is assuming all the oil passages were cleaned out
properly

Are you using a prelubber while turning the motor over by hand? If you just turning a fresh/ unstated motor over by hand without a prelubber im not sure you will ever get oil out of the rockers. It takes the oil quite a bit of time to get to the rockers even once the motor is started. I have seen it take noticeable time to get oil out of the rockers on a brand new/ not pre lubbed (with kent moore, Melling or the home made equivalent tool) motor.

Get a mechanical gauge on there and crank it over with the ignition coils unplugged and see where you are at...as long as pressure comes up to normal 30-60 then I wouldn't worry about visually seeing oil at rockers
