Default Re-Use bolts

I'm changing my heads and some one told me that I have to buy all new bolts that come out the block, true or false?

True.

The stock GM bolts are torque to yield. Once you install them, you angle torque them to get final stretch. Once they are stretched, you cannot re-stretch them.

Get ARP bolts or be a baller and get ARP studs.

True, GM bolts are one time use and so are the head gaskets.

Only the head bolts are one time use, sometimes you can re use head gaskets but I wouldn't recommend it

If you still have stock manifolds replace the bolts it's cheap cya insurance. I chunk them when we do them at work had a few here and there break off after pulling the heads while re torquing them

I bought ARP bolts, you don't have to stretch them, they just get torqued and you're done, plus those ARE reuseable unlike the stock ones so I never have to buy another set.

Great choice. Be sure to get ALL of the fluid out of the bolt holes before installing new bolts. If you don't, the trapped fluid will expand & can crack the block. A little copper spray on the head gaskets doesn't hurt either.

You can also get studs from alper motorsports, or ebay for like $60. I use them, along with many others on here with good luck!!

arp hardware is worth its weight in gold - one of the best investments you can make if you plan on doing any kind of work, be it maintenance or mods.

unless you're going to be rebuilding the shortblock though, I would stick with arp bolts vs. the studs. the studs load the block differently and could potentially alter your bore shape. most competent machine shops will ask you for the hardware you'll be using in the build and do the machine work with those to compensate.

That kit from summit is okay, but it comes with a lot of gaskets that don't need to be replaced. For example the valve cover gaskets and intake gaskets can be reused. The manifold/header gaskets can also be reused if they are undamaged and in good condition.

You want the earlier style bolts if you have a pre-2004 LS1.

The GM MLS gaskets seal up the best.

So the bolts in the kit aren't the right ones, I'm pretty much going new with everything, but I didn't know you couldnt reuse the bolts

The summit kit doesn't list early vs. later LS1; although, the photo shows 3 different length bolts which is correct (assuming the photo is what you are really getting). I've ordered from Texas Speed many times and trust them. Besides, you'll save a few bucks.

make sure you get the right bolts/studs.. I just about made a $400 mistake and got studs that were for newer engines than mine, i caught it in the checkout..
