Default What will this cam do in a truck?

My K2500 Suburban has bad lifter/cam and I am trying to use stuff I have laying around rather than buying something new. Anyhow, I have a set of 243 heads to bump compression that I will be installing with one of these:

02+ LS6 Cam: 204/218@.50 .550/.550 lift 117.5 LSA

or this one:

111* intake CL
Intake open @ 0* BTDC close 42* ABDC
Exhaust open @ 50* BBDC close 0* ATDC
223/230 duration @ .050
.610"/.613" lift
113 LSA

I don't tow much at all with this, mainly trailer the quads through the mountains if anything. Most times it's just a people mover. I am leaning towards the Z06 cam for the drivability however I have read everywhere that torque is non-existent even with the larger displacement of a 6.0. Also, when towing through the mountains it's usually screaming at 3k+ RPM which is what I would prefer to improve. The stock stall seems to flash to about 2800 so getting going from a dead stop is not really a problem.

I nearly have my mind made up, just want to see what everyone's opinion is here.

I would think the second cam is more like what you need. Mostly I'm just giving you a bump! Where's pred-Z?

I'd sell the ls6 cam(LSA is to wide and it need a little more intake duration), and the 223/230 113lsa+2( it's to big, needs an lower IVC, and lower intake and exhaust duration, and it needs a higher stall TC).
I'd run a cam around the size if a 212/218 +4* on the INT./EXH. duration, with a lsa in the 111-115 range, otherwise stick with the stock cam.

That 223 cam is not right.

I'd do a 218/228 110+3. Or a 108 straight up.

Thanks, gentleman! I know a comp 265 low lift would be ideal, I installed one in my 5.3 Silverado and it rocked! Not looking to spend $400 on the cam for the Suburban though, not now anyhow. I have read the Z06 is disastrous in a heavy truck, however I have never seen where anyone has tired it and commented on it afterwards.

The Z06 a $400 gamble to me since I have everything else (even the gaskets and lifters) and if it ends up to be sooo terribly bad I can swap the 265 low lift straight in and use the same same pushrods, springs, etc. Looks as if I'll be trying the Z06!

the ls6 with work the best of the two
So the ls6 cam will make more low end power ~3000rpm than a slightly bigger cam with .060 more lift and lower lsa/icl?

I know that neither one is ideal, but these are what I already have laying around. I guess the true question was which one would suck the least, LOL! I am hoping the bump in compression from the 243's and increased displacement of the 6.0 will help down low. I guess we'll see!

I'm happy to let you have my take-out stock 06 LS2 CTS-V cam. I think it may be a little smaller than your Z06. Not sure it will be optimal, but it's another option.

Thanks for the offer, however the LS2 cam does not have the cam sensor reluctor at the rear of the cam since they use the front cover mounted sensor and read off the cam gear. I would have to install a new front cover, cam gear, and extend the wiring for the cam sensor.

IMO, if you're going to go with the LS6 cam then I'd advance the cam 4*.
This will move the power-band down several hundred rpm, and give slightly better low-end torque.
Still this will be far from ideal.

I would think the second cam is more like what you need.

There was a guy with a swapped blazer truck with the ls6 cam and has been complaining about lack of low end.

I would NOT run a ls6 cam in a 5.3, especially not in a truck.

Don't know if you're responding to me here, I have a 6.0 with a 4L80 and 4.10's.

I wouldn't run it in a truck period.

I would want something focused on low-mid rpm power and not caring if it was done at 6000rpm. That's kinda the opposite of what a ls6 cam does from what I've seen.
